Evolution: The Beginning

By Ashten Elliott

I recently played the card game Evolution: The Beginning, so I thought I’d talk about it since not many people seem to know about it. Evolution: The beginning is a two to four-player card game in which you play cards to modify your species to survive and gain more points in order to win the game. You gain points by feeding your species and collecting the food at the start of your turn. You can make your creatures carnivores, which eat other creatures and can cause your opponent’s species to go extinct, and since you also gain points based on the cards you have left this is the best way to stop your opponent from gaining points.
The game itself is a way to get into the series which has three other games which are supposed to be more complicated versions of Evolution: The Beginning with different rules and gameplay mechanics, so far the other games in the series are Evolution, Evolution: Climate, Evolution: Flight, and Evolution: Oceans which comes out on September 12th. Flight is an expansion to the original game, while climate is standalone and Oceans is also going to be a standalone game. Back to The Beginning, the game ends once the deck has been gone through and the person to the right of that last person has had their turn you can change this so that the deck has to be gone through a certain amount of times to end the game or have it so that once a person loses all their species the game ends, however, if you choose the last option you will need to make sure that no one has any species immune to predator attacks otherwise the game wouldn’t end until you say so. Overall I found this game to be a lot of fun and plan to play the other installments in the series soon if you would like to play the game now would be a good time to get it as it is less than twenty dollars at most places.
