The Joker Movie Review

By Cole Negen
I’m not the biggest fan of movies. Often times they are laced with unfunny humor, or preachy subtopics that really just annoy me. Every once in a while though, there is a movie that sticks out to me that I usually go down to see with my friends. The last movie I saw was Joker. If I had to tell you what I thought of the joker in a sentence, I would probably say “This movie is freaking nuts!” It takes place in 1981 in Gotham City. Gotham is made out to be like a New York City clone, and the directors did a fantastic job of setting the scene and tone of the movie, as Gotham is very dark and gloomy. Most scenes take place either at night or during a very overcast/cloudy day. The protagonist turned anti-hero Arthur Fleck is played by Joaquin Phoenix, who just does an incredible job as Arthur. If he does not win at least a couple of awards for this performance I would be completely shocked. Arthur Fleck works as a party clown for rent. He lives in a very poor area of Gotham, in a run down apartment with his Mom. His surroundings and job are very sad, but on top of this, Arthur struggles with mental illness. Some of the first scenes in the movie are Arthur in a therapist’s office. He also has a condition where he laughs uncontrollably, even though he doesn’t think anything is funny, or really that he is even happy. Which is pretty much a lot of this movie. Arthur works in a crummy job, lives a sad apartment, has to take care of his aging mother, all while the city around him is slowly falling apart. The movie does a wonderful job of portraying Arthur as this mentally ill man who you just can’t help but feel bad for, while simultaneously it has you waiting for that moment when it finally becomes too much and Arthur snaps. I will say it is a long journey down the rabbit hole as Arthur continues to try and make something of himself in a City that wants to throw him down and keep him down. Not only this, but Arthur also learns more about his Mom and his past. The directors made this movie so down to earth and real, that it almost feels like you are living in Gotham. In fact, the movie is so down to earth, it can be kinda hard to watch. It just hits you with that feeling of realization about the world we live in. It’s dark, it’s unfair, the rich are celebrated while the poor are forgotten, and people amuse themselves with other people’s hardships. It really feels like Joker could almost be a biography of what the world could become. It’s scary, it’s chaos, and the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time, and I love it.
Rating: 9.8/10
