Bachelor Finale

By: Kelton Kluiter

This week on the Bachelor… This week was the finale week. The week everyone has been waiting for since the first week of the season. The finale was a two-part episode starting on Monday with Hannah meeting Peter’s parents for the first time. Hannah made it clear before she met Peter’s parents that she was going to show Peter’s parents how much she loved and cared for him. She did in fact do that. She was all over Peter talking about how much she loved him and went on and on about how much she loved him and Peter’s parents loved that.

Peter’s mom then met Madison… That didn’t go as well as the first time they met. It just felt so awkward and Madison didn’t show much emotion towards Peter and his family. Peter’s mom was very concerned about how strong Peter’s feelings were for Madison because she could tell that the feelings Madison had for Peter weren’t nearly as strong. After Madison left Peter has a chat with his parents and they went on about how amazing Hannah is and that she is just the most perfect girl in the entire world and that Madison and him wouldn’t work because they were nothing like each other.

Then on Madison’s final date, she told Peter that it just wouldn’t work and she couldn’t continue anymore. So she left and Peter was left in shock. He really didn’t know what to do anymore. The next night was Hannah’s date and Hannah told him about how she felt like she didn’t feel like Peter had the same feelings for her. Peter just said that it was really hard right now because his heart was being pulled in two separate directions. Hannah didn’t like that one.

The next day Peter was super excited to propose to Hannah. Then he found out that she didn’t know if she was going to come to the proposal. Peter was left in shock. Then she ended up coming and Peter proposed and everyone was very happy and it felt like there was no way that anything could ruin this… Then part two came. It started with Hannah going over to Peter’s house and you could just tell something was off. They hadn’t seen each other in a month. Peter basically just cut it off and Hannah went off on him and it was really funny.

Then on the live show, Hannah and Peter met again and Hannah was roasting him again. Peter’s mom was acting like she absolutely hated Peter for what he did. Then they showed Chris going over to Madison’s and telling her about what happened with Peter and Hannah. She then admitted that she regretted leaving and she still loves Peter. So she goes and meets up with Peter and tells him how she feels. Peter can’t believe it.

Madison and Peter then talk again on the live show and talk about things and Peter’s mom can’t stand Madison. She is so mad that Peter is giving her another chance. Then is basically just ends. Nothing else happens. Worst ending ever.

Why You Should Vote

People have died defending the right to vote. Voting is more than just electing a candidate, its choosing the right policies and people who have your best interests in mind when making decisions that will affect your community, state, and nation. You are taking an active role on deciding issues like immigration, equal opportunity, health care, voting rights, infrastructure, education, social security, and taxes etc.

When you vote for a member of Congress, the President, the governor and your legislators make decisions that affect minimum wage, fairness in hiring, pay equity, job security, workplace safety, and health insurance provided by your employer. Local and state school board members who you elect will make decisions on policies and budgets that will affect how well prepared your children will be for their future. Your legislators, governor, members of congress, and the president also make decisions that affect the cost and equality of public schools and higher learning institutions.

Your vote grants the governor, legislature, and Congress the right to take action and pass or reject laws that will determine your access to health care. Whoever you elect for president and congress will decide how much payroll tax you pay and what medicare services you receive and share payment for. They also make decisions on cost of living increases and benefit schedules for your Social Security pension. Elected officials and judges make day to day decisions on laws that will affect you community, law enforcement, crime prevention, traffic patterns, and where to build schools. These are the many reasons you should vote.

How Dogs Contribute To Our Personal Health

By: Cheyenne Behrends

Have you ever wondered why there are so many more dog people out there than cat people? Dogs share our lives in a way that most other animals can’t. They are so prevalent that it is easy to take their love for granted.

Dogs are extremely friendly and they love human companionship. Your dog waits for you by the door, face smiling and tail wagging, ready to play with you, his best friend. Dogs are loyal and just like wild animals, they respond to a leader which is their owner. Dogs are eager to please you in any way they can. When you are sad, sick, etc. your dog will always remain by your side silently comforting you. Even when you’re happy and excited your dog will always be right next to you and share that happiness. They are also very playful. They love any sort of physical activity such as going for walks, playing fetch, go swimming, and even just running around like a chicken with its head cut off. Yet, dogs can also be very soft and cuddly and ready at anytime for a nice scratch on the back. They can remain calm when necessary and be tolerant of young children who don’t know how to yet be gentle around any type of animal. Having a family dog is such an important step in life that I believe everybody should take. Our dogs are always there for us, day and night, taking part in almost every activity that us humans do. They also play a big part in family life even when the family isn’t at home. They can travel with us in cars no matter where the final destination is. Because they can travel with us, they can be part of our lives in a way that most other companion animals can’t. Some people might say that having one dog would be bad because it might be home alone all the time. Well your solution is to get two dogs. So, when they are home alone they can still play with each other!

Above all else, dogs deserve gentle handling and a huge amount of our time and attention. When we give our love freely to our dogs, we receive their love in return. Dogs truly can be a man’s best friend and we should feel honored to be theirs too.

Military

By: Ainsley Lovrien

The military is important to this government because we need to be protected. The military supports the country by fighting for the things the government needs. The military goes to another country to fight for the things the government needs. The military is an important thing because the government uses it a lot when it is in trouble. The military needs to be strong for the country to be strong.

Most countries are most known for their military because that is the main thing that other countries notice. I a country has a strong military they are less likely to attack them. The military being strong can prevent random attacks to the people. The military also helps with people’s education. The military can help people who are too poor to go to school. The military also helps give people a purpose for their lives.

The military is good for the government because it can do anything. If they need to change something with another country they would have the military go help. The military can also get people to not do bad things with their lives. It is likely that someone who grew up in a bad place they could turn out to be a bad person, but if they join the military they are likely to not make the same decisions. The military is a very important part of the government.

Homework- Is It Worth It?

By: Tess Lampe

Homework is something that most people hate, but is it something that should be abolished though? Some people see that as an easy question - yes. Others, however, see homework as something that really does improve a student academically.

Headteacher at Beechwood Park School Edward Belfour says that homework is “part and parcel of developing independent learning” and it is challenging work that “gently pushes children out of their comfort zone,” Further, he states that not only does homework “help[s] towards developing independence and confidence in young children in preparation for adulthood,” but it also allows students to “demonstrate their flair and their ingenuity, their creativity and their character.”

On February 14, 2019, a study was conducted by the Center of American Progress that includes information about American homework assignments and how they aren’t too demanding when it comes to “basic skills.” Additionally, it goes into detail about how homework relates to the standards of Common Core, “show not only what they know, but what they can do with that knowledge [is now generally embraced in most states].” Similar argument presents the statement that homework “focuses on basic skills such as procedural knowledge in math or memorization and recall in language arts. It generally does not require students to demonstrate deeper knowledge skills, such as the ability to analyze, conceptualize, or generate - as required by Common Core.”

On the other hand, many believe that homework is essentially useless and only causes stress. Elissa Strauss stated that much research has been conducted over homework and have only resulted in mixed results, ultimately concluding that homework is pretty much useless for elementary students. For older students, the benefits of homework don’t increase as much as believed. Strauss also stated how having no homework not only benefits the child, but it benefits the parent or caregiver, along with the household as a whole. “Meanwhile [neighbors are busy with homework all week], our family takes that time to enjoy our kids.” Further, Strauss states how schooling schedules and traditions/cultures were created when mothers were always available to their children. Now, however, parents are not home very often to aid their children with schooling. “We need to accommodate for the fact that nobody’s home to watch kids after school and during holiday breaks, or to spend four hours building a ‘Bridge to Terabithia’ diorama on a Thursday afternoon.”

Another argument is made by Jen Hogan, who says “Childhood is short and evenings should be for learning life skills, family time and plain old fun.” Mrs. Hogan essentially says that as homework continues and repeats, children become less energetic, as homework has taken over the time for play. Children and teenagers during summer are energetic, playful, and more encouraged. When they come home during the school year, however, none of that seems to be nearly as present. Jen compares homework to work in adult life, “I can’t imagine someone saying to an adult who arrives home tired from a day at work, ‘Hey, do you know what you should do now? You should do even more work.’” She continues this by saying that it would also be foolish to believe that this repetition and stress would build love for a job, or in this case, for school.

A study showed that homework through fifth grade is too easy for many parents’ children and doesn’t impact education very much. For high school students, however, the homework is usually or is supposed to be beneficial and educational, but can often be challenging and take up much free time.

All of this being said, the argument for and against homework is not one-sided. Each side has pros and cons in different situations. For example, the difference between elementary level and high school level homework. Sacrifice child creativity for a low to non-existent amount of achievement in elementary school just to follow Common Core? Sacrifice free time and create challenges & stress for beneficial education? Those are the questions frequently asked in this debate, which are both up to each person and each school to decide.

Fallout

By: Ashten Elliott

Have you ever played Fallout and thought this is cool, but what if it was in space (except for Mothership Zeta of course) well then I have the game for you. The Outer Worlds is a game made by Obsidian the guys who made the original Fallout games, New Vegas, Knights of the old Republic, and the South Park games, so I think that they have a pretty good track record. In the Outer Worlds, you take control of a colonist on the Hope an abandoned space transport full of some of the best humanity had to offer. You are revived by Dr.Phineas who no longer has a triangle head nor a brother named Ferb. Phineas sends you to gather more materials in order to find a way to thaw out the rest of the Hope’s colonists who remain in Cryostasis. You land on Terra 2 which as you may expect is like a second Earth only more chaotic and alien. You have to get a power core for your ship and to do that you need to go to the first town. Upon getting to the first city in the game you are met with your first choice of the game which is to choose between giving power to a small Backwater town named Edgewater or to a group of deserters who left the jobs given to them by the board which is a group of corporations who rule the halcyon colony. Taking a break from the story the game is as you may expect an RPG that gives you a lot of freedom to explore the several planets in the colony and multiple ways to deal with each situation. Character progression follows a similar formula to New Vegas where every level you get stat points to put into your stats and every other level you get a perk point, unlike vegas every twenty points put into a level unlocks a free perk correlating to that skill. Up to 50 skill points you assign points to a category and everything undergoes up, so if I put one point into guns at twenty points my big guns, long guns, and handguns all go up to 21. Besides character building which I recommend looking up a guide for since they don’t explain some things super well the game itself looks really nice. The game has a kind of frontier vibe which means you’re basically a space cowboy, at least that’s what it feels like. Every area has different biomes and new really cool looking wildlife to fight. Overall, if you like semiopen world RPGs than I would highly recommend The Outer Worlds which is one of the best I’ve ever played.

Sea Lions

By: Morgan Jacobs

Appearance

The sea lion reaches about 400 pounds and is about 6 feet long. Their body shape has a fusiform body shape which makes them sleek and makes them glide through the water easier and faster. The color of sea lions may vary from a tan, dark chocolate color or grey. Their fore flippers are a “wing” like shape and their hind flippers are longer and they help the sea lion the steer which way it goes in the water.

Habitat

The sea lions live on the islands of the Galápagos. You can usually find the sea lions by the rocks and sandy shores. You can also find them out in the ocean by the islands of the Galápagos. Why you can also find them out in the ocean is because they are usually looking for food.

Population

The drop of the population of sea lions started in 1980. In 1980, there were around 300,000 sea lions. Today, there are fewer than 100,000 sea lions. This is one of the main reasons why the sea lion is on the endangered list.

Family

It takes about 11 to 11 and ½ months for a sea lion baby to produce. Baby sea lions are also called pups. Pups are usually born in June, but they are also born in the other months as well. It is most likely for female sea lions to have one pup. Also twins are not seen that often, but twin sea lions have been documented.

Food

Sea lions forage for their food in the ocean. They eat over 50 types of fish and cephalopods. An example of a cephalopod is an octopus. Usually they eat squids, octopi, hake, northern anchovy, opaleye, and herring.

Threats

Why sea lions are endangered is because if they are introduced to any species they don’t know, like a dog, they could get diseases from them. They are also affected by the climate change of the ocean currents. That impacts their fish prey abundance. Lastly, they are victims of bycatch in fisheries.

Help ( What is being done )

The WWF is helping the sea lions by “adopting a sea lion” where you can buy a stuffed sea lion and the money from that goes to the sea lions to help them. The money is also used in a project to help them to stay alive. This is also run through the WWF.

Interesting facts

There are 17 types of sea lions and fur seals. They can swim to speeds of 11 to 24 miles per hour and are able to stay underwater for 10 to 15 minutes at a time. They can also dive into the ocean at depths up to 1,300 feet. Sea lions live for 25 to 35 years in a zoo, but in the wild they live for 10 to 15 year of age.

Embryo Transfer

By: Ainsley Lovrien

Embryo transfer involves the recovery of embryos, most likely from an elite female or donor and the subsequent transfer to recipient females. The recovery of embryos includes the induction of multiple ovulation by hormonal treatment. Embryo transfer is used to disseminate desirable genes from superior female animals from various species (cattle, pigs, horses, goats, and sheep).

There are many advantages to embryo transfer. The main advantages are: increase in the number of offspring per female, easier and more rapid exchange of genetic material between countries, less transport of live animals, thereby reducing risks of disease transmission, and storage and expansion of rare genetic stock.

Embryo transfer has proved to be a powerful technology in the genetic improvement of farm animals to propagate the genes of females of superior pedigree. In cattle, mainly in the dairy industry, breeding programs have been developed to promote the genetic process by strategic use of conventional methods to produce embryos available for transfer, new technologies that produce embryos after cloning by a somatic cell transfer or transgenesis are available but not widely used commercially.

Embryo transfer protocols have also been extensively used in research critical to understand several areas of biology and medicine, such as maternal-fetal interactions, models of human and animal disease, production of transgenic animals to produce therapeutic proteins for people, etc. This discussion is restricted to the principles and methods currently used in commercial embryo transfer of farm animals. Except in horses, embryo transfer programs in most mammals include the administration of drugs that superovulate females to allow the probability that multiple embryos were collected per producer.

Embryo transfer can be performed after various durations of embryo culture, conferring different stages in embryogenesis. The main stages that embryo transfer takes part in are called cleavage stage (day 2 to 4 after co-incubation) or the blastocyst stage (day 5 to 6 after co-incubation). There are a significantly higher odds of preterm births and congenital anomalies among births having reached the blastocyst stage compared with the cleavage stage. Increased female embryo mortality due to epigenetic modifications induced by extended culture.

Seasonal Affective Disorder

By: Janet  Borchardt

Seasonal affective disorder, also known as SAD, is a type of depression that is linked to the changes in weather. Typically, people affected by this disorder begin to feel depressed in the fall and continue feeling this way until the winter ends and spring begins. Though it may not seem like a major affect, the lack of sunlight during this time may be enough to cause an imbalance of chemicals in some people, resulting in a state of depression during the winter months. Sunlight triggers the production of serotonin, which a chemical that makes a person feel happy or joyful.

There are many symptoms you may feel if seasonal affective disorder is starting to take shape within your mind, similar to depression. There may be a loss of interest in activities you regularly love to do. You may experience lower energy, struggle to get to sleep or stay asleep, and see inconsistent loss or increase in appetite. Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and guilt may begin to creep into your mind. Finally, thoughts of suicide or self harm are possible, and very serious. It is important to go to the doctor when you begin noticing any of these symptoms in combination with each other. Typically, the best indicator is when you lose motivation and passion for something you’ve always enjoyed doing.

Don’t worry, because there are some different ways to fight this seasonal depression. Many people try light therapy to naturally expose themselves to light which can produce serotonin, to naturally balance their levels. There is also a track some people choose to take with using medication. Lastly, psychotherapy is another option where a person can improve their state just by talking to a professional. All three of these methods are unique in their own ways and can be effective depending on the person. Next time you hear the phrase “winter blues”, you will know a little more of the meaning and science behind that phrase.

The Bachelor

By: Kelton Kluiter

This week on the Bachelor… This week was women tell-all week. Girls tell-all week is where all the girls that got sent home get together and talk about all of their experiences on the show. To start off the episode they started with last week’s rose ceremony that we never got to. We all thought Madison went home but she ends up showing up to the rose ceremony. Peter is visibly shaken up because of the tough choice that he has to make. He ends up choosing Madison, and Hannah Ann.

I was quite surprised that Madison excepted the rose because of the things that happened last week and by the way she was so upset with Peter. Victoria was very upset with Peter that he chose to send her home. After the rose ceremony, they went back to the women tell-all and they were all roasting Alayah. Savannah then attempts to back her up and immediately gets shut down by all the other women.

Kelsey then talks about “champaign gate” and kind of poked fun of herself for it which I liked because it didn’t start any other drama. Then Tammy being Tammy has to start some stupid drama. I swear every argument on the show while Tammy was on the show was started by Tammy. She literally had zero chance to win the show I don’t get why she got so worked up.

Towards the end of the episode, they brought one of the old bachelorettes on and talked about all the backlash and hate they get when they get off the show and for them it is really hard to deal with because they just went through a breakup and still have to deal with all of those things. At the end of the episode, they showed another sneak peek to the finale episode and it looks amazing. I’m so excited for next Monday and Tuesday.

Types of People in a Study Hall

By: Grace Litterer

Well, this is it, folks. I officially start newspaper articles next week. This is the last blog I will write until golf season is over, and I decided to go out with a bang. Now, as promised, I am going to finish this two-part series. Last week, we went over the Procrastinator and the Moviegoer. This week we introduce two new types.

The first is, of course, the Overloader. This person is absolutely frantic. This person has 10 worksheets, 2 projects, 3 papers, and a speech and they intend to get it all done in one study hall. The Overloader is easily recognizable. All you have to do is look for the person that has a three-foot-tall stack of textbooks, notebooks, and folders sitting next to them. They are also identifiable by the stressed and frantic look on their face. I have to be completely honest. I have totally been here. I know the feeling. I know the race to get all of your homework done. I know it. I’ve lived it. Here’s a tell-all fun fact about these people. Most of the time, this person can get it all done, but sometimes…sometimes they don’t get it done, and that’s when sanity leaves the building. This person will do anything to get done with their homework. They will do it during another class if they have to. I play a fun little game where I try to figure out what they have going on after school that they can’t take 10 minutes to finish their math homework. It’s fun to imagine the wildest of things about this person, but, more often than not, they just really want to get back to that Netflix show they have been watching.

The other type of person you will see during study halls is the Traveller. Believe it or not, this happens very often. This person only took a study hall so that they could walk around the school hallways and dilly dally in teachers’ classrooms. This person’s only goal is to sign out of study hall and walk around aimlessly. What a care-free life they must live! To be the Traveller is to know that you can get away with pretty much anything. A 45-minute bathroom break? Sure, why not? There’s nothing and no one stopping this Traveller. I can say with absolute certainty that I have no idea why the Traveller would wander around instead of doing homework, or even watching a movie, but, hey, to each his own. At the very least, this person lives a care-free life. That’s more than I can say.

In conclusion, as a high school junior, I have become pretty good at determining what a student is going to do during their study halls, whether they be a Procrastinator, a Moviegoer, an Overloader, or a Traveller. No matter what type of student you are, be proud of it. There’s pros and cons to all types of study hall goers.

Why GMOs are good.

By: Ethan Schmidt

There has been a big controversy going on about GMO’s. If you don't know what GMOs are, they are genetically modified organisms. This means it is an organism whose genetic makeup has been modified in a lab using genetic engineering technology. This creates combinations of organisms that do not occur in nature or traditional cross-breeding techniques. Many people say that GMOs are bad to eat and they are bad for the environment, but this is not true.

GMOs are tested for safety before they go to market. In the US, GM foods must be tested before they can be sold. This testing process can take 7-10 years. It must evaluate the risk to humans, animals, and the environment.

They are among the most tested products in history. 1,700 peer-reviewed studies found no evidence that GMO crops produce effects in humans or livestock. A test found that GM food is just as healthy and nutritious as non-GMO foods.

GMOs can reduce pesticide use. GMO crops can allow farmers to use less pesticides on their fields. GM crops can be modified to fight against the pests on their own. On average, GM technology has reduced chemical pesticide use by 37%, increased crop yield by 22% and increased farmer’s prophets by 68%.

GMOs may be our best bet to adapt to changing global conditions. Climate change and population growth are putting pressure on the agricultural industry to feed a hungry world. Many croplands are experiencing drought. Biotechnology can help us develop more resilient crop varieties that are better able to survive these changing conditions.

Student Debt on the Rise

By: Tess Lampe

$1.4 trillion -

That’s how much student debt the United States currently holds. Furthermore, about $2,858 of student debt is accumulated each second in the United States. What exactly is student debt though? Well, student debt is essentially the amount of money one owes on a loan taken out to pay for education, specifically college. This debt usually racks up fairly quickly because of increasing tuition for most colleges, expensive textbooks, room & board, etc. That being said, saving up money is only sufficient to an extent and causes students to take out loans. This is especially true for those working towards advanced degrees - degrees above a bachelor’s (master’s, doctorate, PhD, etc.)

Student debt has become an increasingly high issue to the point where it is now a primary issue of discussion for the United States government and economy. A pro to student debt is that one may earn more money because of the interest included with their loan, which in some cases, one may believe that makes the process worthwhile. However, it is obvious that to most people, the cons of student debt outweigh the pros. A major con of student debt is that not only does a person stress over not being able to pay for college directly or not being able to pay their loan, but in their efforts to pay for their education, they end up not even being able to graduate. This effect can take more of a toll on certain people, depending on their degree and or their career path. Further, this debt usually begins to stack in early age, so it can take quite a while for a person to be able to pay off their loans.

Some manage to avoid this struggle all together by getting many scholarships or even a full ride scholarship - a payment, award, or grant that covers the entire cost of college for a person. Other ways to avoid or decrease student debt include enrolling at less expensive colleges, having a tuition plan, saving up as much money as possible before college, and having a job.

These are the obvious ways, but these don’t always work for each person and their college plan. That being said, college is not the only choice after high school and one can be very successful in many fields without receiving much further education.
