Thanksgiving Dinner

By: Kori Wedeking

As Thanksgiving approaches, there is lots that needs to be done in order to achieve the perfect Thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving can put a lot of pressure on those who have to host and cook the meal. The Food Network has several tips for planning a stress-free Thanksgiving.

About three weeks prior to the dinner, you should prepare and finalize a guest list. After doing so, you will be able to find out if any guests have allergies or dietary needs. These allergies and needs could alter the meal you want to prepare. Finally, you should make sure you have enough tables, chairs, plates, and silverware for the event. If you do not, you should begin to make plans to borrow or rent what you will need.

When Thanksgiving is two weeks away, you should decide on your final menu and collect all the recipes you will need. You should also assign any cooking projects to family members willing to help. Assigning the non-cooking family members to bring the drinks is a smart option. Along with this, you should buy your turkey and non-perishable items for the meal.

Once Thanksgiving is three days away, you should take your turkey out of the freezer and place it in the refrigerator to defrost. Find all your pans, serving dishes, and roasters that you might need for the meal. It would also be a good idea to clean your house at this time. You can begin to shop for perishable items if you have time.

Two days before Thanksgiving, you can make your pumpkin pies. You may also make soups, cranberry sauce, and any other dishes that are able to sit in the fridge for a couple of days. Assembling your casseroles is also something you can do. The more you are able to get done before the day of the meal, the better.

The day before the meal, set up your tables so you do not have to worry about it on Thanksgiving. You should buy any food items you have not bought yet. You should also calculate your cooking time before the big meal.

Thanksgiving day has arrived. If you followed the tips listed above, you have put yourself in a position to host a fabulous Thanksgiving dinner. Thanksgiving day will still be hectic, as you have to cook the turkey, make the stuffing, make potatoes, and prepare any other dishes, but it will be less stressful if you prepared. Hopefully, the Food Network’s tips can make your Thanksgiving dinner special.

My Thoughts on the 2020 Grammy Nominations

By: Cole Negen

The annual Grammy nominations came out Wednesday morning. As I write this there hasn’t been much in terms of public reaction yet, but I wanted to express my opinion on some of the topics. Now before I start, it’s important to point out that the Grammy’s are favored towards records that sell a lot. They are very pop-centric, so it isn’t really a measure of how good a song or album is, it’s pretty much just a selection of “what’s gonna get the least amount of backlash. So all of these nominations either get a lot of radio play, or are otherwise widely enjoyed across genre listening groups. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at some of these categories.

Record of the year
Hey Ma - Bon Iver
Bad Guy - Billie Eilish
7 Rings - Ariana Grande
Hard Place - H.E.R
Talk - Khalid
Old Town Road - Lil Nas X feat. Billy Ray Cyrus
Truth Hurts - Lizzo
Sunflower - Swae Lee & Post Malone

This is the general field, or all together. It’s important to note the difference between record of the year and Song of the Year. The record of the year goes to the entire staff that worked on the project, while song just goes to the songwriters. This category is definitely in favor of pop artists and albums. Not all of them are distinctly “pop”, but they all have a lot of pop qualities. My pick out of the group would definitely have to be Old Town Road. Yes, it’s heavily over-played, but I still can’t deny that it is a catchy, fun song, and a unique one at that. It is for sure the best song in the bunch. I think that it will probably end up going to Old Town Road as well, just because of how that song just completely ruled this entire year. I could see it going to Billie, I could see it going to Lizzo, but I just doubt it will. I don’t see how the Academy can deny Lil Nas X.

Album of the Year
I, I - Bon Iver
Norman ******* Rockwell - Lana Del Rey
When We All Fall Asleep, Where do We Go? - Billie Eilish
Thank U, Next - Ariana Grande
I Used to Know Her - H.E.R
7 - Lil Nas X
Cuz I Love You - Lizzo
Father of the Bride - Vampire Weekend

In my complete and honest opinion, these nominations suck. It seems as though Bon Iver made it because he is Bon Iver. Lana Del Rey’s album is probably the best of the bunch, however it isn’t really my cup of tea, and more than likely it probably won’t win. Billie Eilish’s album is most likely to win, but I just see that album as too scant, and too dumbed down. When she isn’t being over-dramatic she is boring me to death, and even though I’m not a Billie Eilish fan, I know of people who follow her that were disappointed with this release. Thank U, Next… it’s just not for me. Lil Nas X’s album was way too spotty to even deserve a nomination. I liked the EP, and I think Lil Nas X showed a ton of potential, but overall he was just too inexperienced and naive to make a cohesive project. Nothing against him, that’s just the way it turned out. The rest I haven’t really listened too or don’t know much about, but overall there is some album’s that I feel like way deserved the nomination. Specifically, Igor by Tyler, the Creator.

Best New Artist
Black Pumas
Billie Eislish
Lil Nas X
Lizzo
Maggie Rogers
Rosalia
Tank and the Bangas
Yola

Don’t have much to say on this, despite just how clueless this award is. Every year they nominate artist for this award that have been in the music industry for years. The only reason they are considered “new” is because they just finally had a record make it onto the charts. Like Lizzo has already been a figure in hip hop for a little while now. Billie already had an EP drop, which you could argue she made her “big studio album debut” here, but then why is Lil Nas X on the list? It’s just weird, probably gonna go to Billie.

Best Rap Performance
Middle Child - J Cole
Suge - DaBaby
Down Bad - Dreamville
Racks in the Middle - Nipsey Hussle feat. Roddy Rich & Hit Boy
Clout - Offset feat. Cardi B

This is best rap performance. So it doesn’t go to the best song, but rather who performed the best on each track. Personally, I would give it to Dreamville, just because of how crazy everyone goes on that song. I think it is very easily the most eccentric and best performance of the bunch. If I had to guess, I would probably say this will go to J Cole, or the committee, could decide to give it to Nipsey as a sort of memoir.

Best Rap Song
Bad Idea - YBN Cordae feat. Chance the Rapper
Gold Roses - Rick Ross feat. Drake
A Lot - 21 Savage feat. J Cole
Racks in the Middle - Nipsey Hussle feat. Roddy Rich & Hit Boy
Suge - DaBaby

I’m so glad Cordae got a nomination here. I love that song and I love that album. But personally I would have to give it to 21 Savage. The song is just so sticky and well performed and well written and it just stands out. I would guess that would probably win the award as well. Also a shoutout to DaBaby, I really liked that song and I could see him walking away with the award.

Best Rap Album
Revenge of the Dreamers III - Dreamville
Championships - Meek Mill
I am > I was - 21 Savage
Igor - Tyler, the Creator
The Lost Boy - YBN Cordae

Once again, I love seeing Cordae on here. Revenge was an alright album, nothing much to say about it. Meek Mill’s album was ok, probably wouldn’t have gotten a nomination from me but I know there are people who like the album. I am > I was was very well liked, despite it not being one of my personal favorites. Look, there is absolutely no way you can’t give it to Igor. The uniqueness, the strangeness of it, but yet it’s so catchy. It’s so boundary pushing, it’s one of the best albums of the decade and I don’t see how you couldn’t choose Tyler here.

Why We Need to Study

By: Ainsley Lovrien

Studying is important becasue it is essential for a person to develop a complete education and provides students with the opportunity to develop time management skills, study habits, and self discipline.

Studying aids in the student’s ability to learn providing the student with knowledge that they can use throughout their life regardless of the career path that they choose.

Homework is a form of studying that helps students learn even if they don’t like it. There are typically three types of homework that require studying by students. First is practice homework, which helps to increase the student’s ability to comprehend the material. The second is preparation for an in class assignment or project. This type of homework is generally researched based or in the form of a brainstorming exercise. The third is extension homework, which is typically a paper or a project and is a long term assignment. These require the most independent work outside of the classroom.

Studying also takes place in studying for tests, quizzes, or final exams. Students need to study in order to learn the material and pass the test, quiz, or exam. Studies show that the two best forms of studying are practice testing and studying evenly over the course of a semester or nine weeks.

In conclusion, studying helps students prepare themselves for upcoming tests, quizzes, and or final exams. There are many ways to study. Some of the ways include, practice homework, preparation for an in class assignment or project, and extension homework. I for one dislike studying a lot, but it does help me with tests, quizzes, and final exams. I think that studying is very important, even if some people dislike it. I think each and every student should study.

Types of People on a Roadtrip (Part 2)

By: Grace Litterer

It’s time for the sequel. Yes. We are back with another list of road-tripping people. Of course, in the first article, we talked about the driver and the passenger. As I wrote, these are the most patient people in the world. The front-seaters are definitely blessings, but, now, it’s time to talk about the back-seaters. Oh, the back seaters. They are not the most patient people you will ever meet. Far from it, actually. The back-seaters are far from blessings, but they have just as important roles.

The first back-seater I would like to talk about is the kid. Now, the kid doesn’t actually have to be a kid, but, most of the time, it is. The kid fulfills the very important role of conversation. The kid will talk about anything and everything that is passing by. One prime example of kid-conversation is, “Oh look! A cow! Look at him! Wow!” The kid loves to point out the obvious. “We’ve been stuck in traffic forever. Ugh.” Now, you have probably guessed already but the primary role of the kid is to ask the dreaded question. “Are we there yet?” or “When will we be there?” Oh man. I could not tell you how many times I’ve been on a road trip with a kid. And yes, they are important to the trip, but sometimes, you just want to tell the kid the shut up. (In my experience, it’s best if you tell them you want to play the Quiet Game. It usually works.) To all the kids out there, please stop asking how long it will be until we get there. Just subtract 5 minutes from what I told you last time.

There is one more all-important role that I must mention before I conclude the series -- The snack distributor. Sometimes, the snack distributor is also the passenger, but usually, the snack distributor is in the back seat. That way, they can reach the snacks. The snack distributor has a very important role in the car. Even though you’ve probably already guessed, I have to say it anyway. The snack distributor distributes the snacks. Yes, this is the person that gets everyone through the ride. The snack distributor knows what everyone wants. The kid, of course, gets the biggest snack. (It shuts them up for longer.) The passenger, who is often a mom, get something healthy (like some baby carrots or something). The driver gets something with easy access, due to the fact that they need to watch the road. And the snack distributor, gets whatever they want, whenever they want it. Speaking from experience, being the snack distributor is the best job on the road trip.

Of course, there are so many more roles that one can take on during a road trip. The sleeper, the spiller, and the cranky one to name a few, but the series has to come to an end at some point. I suppose that I could go on to make the third part, but then you would have to wait yet another week to hear my newest idea for a “types of people” list. And, of course, we can’t have you waiting that long, so, as sad as it may be, the series must come to an end. I have to say goodbye and farewell for this week.

The Black Death - Has It Returned?

By: Tess Lampe

“All the citizens did little except to carry dead bodies to be buried [...] At every church they dug deep pits down to the water-table; and thus those who were poor who died during the night were bundled up quickly and thrown into the pit. In the morning when a large number of bodies were found in the pit, they took some earth and shovelled it down on top of them; and later others were placed on top of them and then another layer of earth, just as one makes lasagne with layers of pasta and cheese.” This is exactly what those living in Europe from 1346 - 1353 often saw or experienced with the disease known as the Black Death. This specific excerpt came from a chronicle (letter) written by a person in Florence, Italy.

The person who wrote this chronicle was trying to relate to another, a Renaissance poet by the name of Petrarch, describing their experiences and what he knew people saw often living in Italy. The words of Petrarch tells how he thought that nobody else would believe the terror that became reality to himself and the people around him, “O happy posterity, who will not experience such abysmal woe and will look upon our testimony as a fable.” Another chronicler by the name of Agnolo di Tura from Tuscany, Italy related by saying, “... in many places in Siena [Italy] great pits were dug and piled deep with the multitude of death [...] And there were also those who were so sparsely covered with earth that the dogs dragged them forth and devoured many bodies throughout the city.”

The Black Death (bubonic plague) ended up killing about 50 million people, which was approximately 60% of Europe’s entire population at the time. From the years 2010 - 2015, there were hundreds to thousands of reports of plague. However, the Black Death is something that we know the effect of from history with these statistics. With that information, many scientists and authorities in China have become worried of a possible repetition of history - another outbreak of the plague. The bubonic plague has been found in the third person in the past week from around Beijing. Even though the disease remains very rare, that is what is causing people to panic. The original cases were two people from Mongolia who were diagnosed with pneumonic plague, which is caused by the same bacterium as the bubonic plague. The third person, identified as a 55-year-old man, was also diagnosed with the bubonic plague in the same area as the previous patients - Beijing. Authorities said that the man caught the disease by “eating wild rabbit meat.”

During the time of the Black Plague in the mid 1300s, over half of the people living in Florence and Siena died. It quickly became an epidemic (a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time; outbreak) of the bubonic plague. When researched scientifically, is was found that the plague is a disease caused by a bacterium known as Yersinia Pestis. This bacteria is often around areas where many large rodents live called a “plague focus.” Whenever a black rat (house rat) comes into contact with a human’s habitat (their house most likely), that person has a high risk of becoming infected because the rodent is carrying a disease dangerously close to the human. Whenever rats have this disease for a certain amount of time, the fleas on them start to bite humans, causing the humans a large bubo or swelling on their lymph nodes, hence the name “bubonic plague.” In eighty percent of cases of the plague, the patients die due to the disease making them ill quickly, taking the person about 23 days to die.

Despite the heavy worry and panic caused by the supposed return of the Black Death plague, the people who were diagnosed with it and all of those whom they have interacted with have been quarantined and treated. Scientists from all over the world, mainly China, are hoping that yet another outbreak is able to be stopped before it could potentially do horrible damage like it did in Europe all of those centuries ago.

Prom

By: Jaelynn Lampe

Prom is probably one of my favorite parts about highschool. I don’t know what it is about it that makes it my favorite, but every year I have so much fun. This year is going to be my last prom, unless I happened to get invited to another one next year by one of my friends. I have gone to prom all four years of highschool. My freshman year, I didn’t go to prom here at Clarksville, I went to prom in Tripoli. One of my best friends asked me to go with her because it was her senior year so I said yes. I didn’t really know how to do prom at the time. I had bought a short grey and black dress that was more like a homecoming dress than a prom dress. I wore converse, crimped my hair instead of getting it professionally done, and didn’t do much for makeup and nails. It was still fun though because I got to be with all my old friends. We had prom in New Hampton, which was really pretty and for after prom we went to the sportsplex in Waterloo. My sophomore year, I went to prom here in Clarksville with Austin Myers. That year I went all out and bought a really expensive and really poofy dress. We actually got to do actual pictures and he let me plan everything, which was a lot of fun. We had prom in the Black’s Building in Waterloo and then we went to the Sportsplex for after prom again. My Juinor year of prom was easily my favorite year that I’ve gone just because I felt like everything looked amazing and I had the most fun. I took Kale Kampman. I bought my dress from a store in Georgia that year and it looked amazing. The flowers we ordered, his tux, our pictures, everything looked amazing it made me very happy. We had prom at the Atrium in Cedar Falls and for afterprom we had a hypnotist and then we went to Get Air. This year, I can already tell is going to be my best year for prom. We are having prom in a beautiful mansion in Des Moines and then going to a place with arcade games and laser tag for afterprom. I already picked out my dress and I’m very excited because its a ball gown from my all time favorite designer. As of right now, I already know who I’m going with and I’m excited to take him because he is one of my best friends and he has always had really bad prom experiences. I still don’t why I get so excited over prom. All I know is I always have a lot of fun and I really enjoy planning it.

Scrabble

By: Ashten Elliott

Everyone knows about Scrabble it’s a classic game that involves making words to score points with the winner of the game being the person with the most points. The game was made in 1938 by Alfred Mosher and published by Hasbro. The game has had multiple variations over the years but the one we’ll be talking about today is a game called Up-Words. Up-Words is different from traditional scrabble because it has a smaller board, a different scoring system, and you can put letters on top of others in order to add to or create new words. The game offers a system in which you have to think ahead more than you would in regular Scrabble as you have a lot more than you can do to make words in this game. In this game, you don’t score points by playing certain tiles that give more points when they are part of the word. In this game, you get two points for every tile placed on the board and one point for every letter placed on top of another.

What it's like Having Cauliflower Ear

By: Cole Negen

“Harvard Medical School.” Harvard Medical School, Getty Images.

It’s a very common problem amongst wrestlers past and present. Cauliflower ear is, in my own description, a build-up of cartilage, blood, and puss in the ear because of repeated trauma, causing deformity. Many people deal with it, some in both ears. Luckily I have only ever dealt with it in my right ear. In wrestling practice, I used to never wear my headgear. No one ever did, it was kind of just something you could do if you wanted, but most people didn’t because of how hot it can get in the wrestling room, and having your headgear on just kind of adds to that heat. Initially, when I got it, I thought it was just a zit in my ear. I tried popping it but that just caused a lot of pain. It was very small at the time. As practices went on, it got bigger, and bigger, to the point where it was hard to ignore. My Dad was the first to spot it. It was on the inner part of my ear, and just looks like sac of blood bulging out of your ear at first. The first time we drained it, I was anxious. I didn’t know how much it would hurt or how long it would take to drain it. It turns out, when it was as puffed up and large as it was, it was pretty painless. I didn’t even feel the needle break my skin. My Mom drained a whole needle full, and there was still some to spare. When it was a lot smaller, it hurt quite a bit when it was put back in. So we did this process probably upwards of 10 times throughout last wrestling season. Before the season ended, it just stopped filling up. That was a huge relief. Finally I could stop taking time to worry about my stupid cauliflower ear. So now for the rest of my life I will have a deformed, ugly ear. I’m not ashamed of it though. It’s kind of like a right of passage that I can share with people who have also wrestled. People can look at it and in a way they can kind of get a small glimpse of who I am, which I think is pretty cool. It is very unique as well. No one else has an ear that looks like mine, and unlike most other wrestlers, I only got it in one ear. So I have one “stupid” ear, as I like to say, and one normal ear. Of course I would not suggest getting cauliflower ear, because it is just unpleasant and inconvenient, but having a weird looking ear for the rest of my life is alright with me.

Equal Rights?

By: Morgan Jacobs

Equality among all is what many strive for on a daily basis. During 1852 to 1906, the United States struggled with giving everyone equal rights. At the time, the only people who could own land, vote in elections, and run for office were white males. Women were not allowed to do these things because they needed to “keep the house in order.” Slaves on the other hand, had to fight the fact that they weren’t given equal rights because they were not white. These equality issues lead to Fredrick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and Abraham Lincoln to fight for equality for all.
To start, Fredrick Douglass fought for slave rights. Douglass thought that the Fourth of July was only a day only for the free white men to celebrate. He felt the independence of the country was made by the white me, so it didn’t feel like his country. Douglass talked about this saying that “... the rich inheritance of injustice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not me.” (Doc. 1G Par. 3) The different practices the United States had also done were considered the most shocking and bloody compared to other nations according to Douglass. The many deaths that had came because of slavery made Douglass think this. Douglass saw how slaves were being treated and as a result, decided to fight for them to get equal rights just like the free white males.
Next is Susan B. Anthony. Anthony fought for women’s rights. Webster, Worcester, and Bovier all defined a citizen as a person in the United States who is entitled to vote and hold office. She thought that because men could hold office and vote, why can’t women not do the same. Anthony thought that men were like kings, they were always in control unlike women on the other hand who were like servants. The servants were always working for the king. The United States formed a union of not just white males, but with women as well and so women should have the same rights as white men. “And we formed the it not to give the blessings of liberty, but to secure them; not to the half of our prosperity; but to the whole people - women as well as men.” ( Doc. 1I Par. 3)
Lastly, Abraham Lincoln fought for everyone to have equal rights. The Civil War ended with everyone having equal rights, except for women and slaves. The lives lost because of the Civil War represented the fight of freedom for all. People fought for others so everyone was equal. The people wanted everyone to be equal and Lincoln helped to express this thought. Lincoln thought that the Civil War had also helped to recreate a new type of freedom. “... that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that the government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from this earth.” (Doc. 1H Par. 3)
In conclusion, Fredrick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, and Abraham Lincoln all fought for equality and freedom in our country and in our government. It was shown through actions like voting even when it was against the law. It was shown by people speaking out about how people were excluded from having basic rights. Finally, it was shown by people in the United States by fighting in the Civil War, so everyone could have the same rights and be equal compared to the average white male at the time.

What is the impact of sports role models to the youth?

By: Cheyenne Behrends

It has become true that if they want to or not, professional athletes are role models to others. Talented athletes hardly win every time, and sometimes they do not show fair play. But, many athletes convey attributes about performance, character, and resilience that draw admiration from fans. High-profile athletes are widely looked at as public figures outside of sports, just like celebrities in other entertainment professions. In sports, such recognition is said to come with additional responsibilities, most in the assumption that athletes are role models in the community.

Athletes are employees when representing their club during community events such as school visits, and charity fundraisers. Off-field expectations of athletes are couched in punitive terms. It is common to refrain that athletes are role models for a wider community. However, this taken-for-granted assumption has not been accompanied by research to explore the efficacy of such claims. There appear to be profound differences between athletes’ self-perception as off-field influencers.

Clubs and leagues have expectations that athletes will conduct themselves appropriately during their private lives. If they don’t, then bad things will happen. Such as the Danry Vasquez baseball player case. He was a professional baseball play that got in trouble for beating his wife. He was obviously suspended and went to jail for a while.

It is still unclear why athletes have the skills or values to be positioned as custodians of virtue in such initiatives. The underlying assumption appears to be that sports give off good character. As a consequence of that, athletes are thought to be equipped to exemplify positive character traits both in sports and during their private lives.

Holidays

By Katie Stirling

It’s October and the holiday season is coming. Halloween is right around the corner, Thanksgiving is in a couple of weeks, and Christmas is just a couple months away. The end of the year has begun.
I like this time of year for many reasons. This is when the holidays start to approach. Halloween is always a good time because of fall. I think most people love fall, especially in Iowa. The weather starts to become enjoyable again. It’s not scorching hot out, but it’s not below freezing yet either. The trees start to turn different colors, making everything prettier.
Then comes Thanksgiving, and the delicious food comes out. A lot of families come together as a tradition and have a big meal. I always enjoy family get-togethers for the most part. Some people don’t get to see their families very often, so they appreciate when they do.
The holiday that a lot of people enjoy the most out of all of these is Christmas. There are so many things that go into Christmas. Many people start planning for it months in advance. For example, Black Friday is when a lot of people get their presents to give to people. This is when stores have big sales and deals. Another thing that typically happens after Thanksgiving is decorating. Many families put up Christmas decorations in/on their house. Christmas trees are very common with decorating. You can either get a real one or a fake one and decorate how you please. There’s also a variety of Christmas movies and music that people enjoy during this holiday season.
Families gather once again when Christmas Day gets closer. They typically have a meal and share presents with one another. As you can see, Christmas can bring happiness in many ways.
The holiday that wraps up the year is New Year’s Eve. This is when people gather to celebrate the year they’ve had, and the year to come.

The Joker Movie Review

By Cole Negen
I’m not the biggest fan of movies. Often times they are laced with unfunny humor, or preachy subtopics that really just annoy me. Every once in a while though, there is a movie that sticks out to me that I usually go down to see with my friends. The last movie I saw was Joker. If I had to tell you what I thought of the joker in a sentence, I would probably say “This movie is freaking nuts!” It takes place in 1981 in Gotham City. Gotham is made out to be like a New York City clone, and the directors did a fantastic job of setting the scene and tone of the movie, as Gotham is very dark and gloomy. Most scenes take place either at night or during a very overcast/cloudy day. The protagonist turned anti-hero Arthur Fleck is played by Joaquin Phoenix, who just does an incredible job as Arthur. If he does not win at least a couple of awards for this performance I would be completely shocked. Arthur Fleck works as a party clown for rent. He lives in a very poor area of Gotham, in a run down apartment with his Mom. His surroundings and job are very sad, but on top of this, Arthur struggles with mental illness. Some of the first scenes in the movie are Arthur in a therapist’s office. He also has a condition where he laughs uncontrollably, even though he doesn’t think anything is funny, or really that he is even happy. Which is pretty much a lot of this movie. Arthur works in a crummy job, lives a sad apartment, has to take care of his aging mother, all while the city around him is slowly falling apart. The movie does a wonderful job of portraying Arthur as this mentally ill man who you just can’t help but feel bad for, while simultaneously it has you waiting for that moment when it finally becomes too much and Arthur snaps. I will say it is a long journey down the rabbit hole as Arthur continues to try and make something of himself in a City that wants to throw him down and keep him down. Not only this, but Arthur also learns more about his Mom and his past. The directors made this movie so down to earth and real, that it almost feels like you are living in Gotham. In fact, the movie is so down to earth, it can be kinda hard to watch. It just hits you with that feeling of realization about the world we live in. It’s dark, it’s unfair, the rich are celebrated while the poor are forgotten, and people amuse themselves with other people’s hardships. It really feels like Joker could almost be a biography of what the world could become. It’s scary, it’s chaos, and the movie keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole time, and I love it.

Why Do We Breathe?

By Ainsley Lovrien

Every part of your body needs oxygen. Every function of your body needs oxygen. Eating your food, digesting, moving your muscles, or just thinking are examples of bodily functions that are required to have oxygen. When these processes happen, carbon dioxide is produced as a waste product. Your lungs job in this system, is to provide these processes with oxygen and to get rid of the waste gas, carbon dioxide.
Your brain is getting constant signals from your body which detect the amount of oxygen and carbon dioxide in your blood. The brain then send signals to the muscles involved in breathing and adjust your breathing rate depending how much activity you spend doing throughout the day.
When you are active, your breathing can increase up to 40-60 times a minute to cope with the extra demand. The delivery of oxygen to your muscles also speeds up, so they can do their job efficiently. The increase in your breathing also makes sure there’s no build up of carbon dioxide in your bloodstream.
Healthy lung tissue is springy and elastic so your muscles need to expand your chest and draw air into your lungs. Signals from the respiratory centre in your brain travel down nerves to your diaphragm and other muscles. The diaphragm is pulled flat, pushing out the lower ribcage up and out. This expands the chest and draws air into the lungs.
Air is pulled through you nose or mouth, which another 15 to 25 times, and finally into thousands of smaller airways until the air reaches the air sacs.
Although breathing is usually automatic, you can control it if you want to. Breathing is important to us while living our lives.

Types of Homework (Part 2)

By Grace Litterer

You guessed it. It’s the highly-anticipated, long-awaited sequel to Types of Homework. As I am a week older and a week farther into junior experience, I have some wonderful new insights to add to my types of homework list.
The third type of homework I have to talk about is homework that I have become well-acquainted with over the years: Makeup Homework. Makeup homework is not fun. Of course, it depends on the class, but, more often than not, this is one of the most stressful types of homework. First, you have to go to the teacher and talk to them about the homework, what you have to do, when it is due, how to do it, etc. Next, you talk to the other students in the class. You clarify everything with them. Is this how you do it? Is this the answer you got? Is this how long yours was? Finally, you turn it in. That’s the end of it, or so you thought. A few days later one of two things can happen and have happened to me. Either, you get the assignment back and you got an F because, apparently, you were supposed to include something else, like a quote from the text, but the teacher never mentioned anything like that. Or, you find out that you have a missing assignment in the grade book because there was another assignment that you had to do that you didn’t know about. Both have happened to me, and I can honestly say that it is the worst to realize that, because you were gone, you have a failing grade and/or you have to spend the extra time redoing the assignment you did wrong. It’s especially a lot to contend with if you miss the whole day because that’s six to eight classes you have makeup work for on top of the homework that was assigned that day.
The fourth type of homework is the Time-Consuming Homework. Now, you may be thinking, all homework takes time. You are correct, my friend, all homework does take time, but not all homework takes hours, or so it feels like, to complete. Now, there are different assignments that can be time-consuming, but the main one is notes. Notes take a long time, or what feels like a long time, to complete. First, you have to read the page/section/chapter or what feels like the whole book. I’ve found that it is really tough to focus on a textbook, especially when you are tired and you are doing your homework at 6:30 or 7:00 after work or sports practice or who knows what else. There have been many times when I have fallen asleep to the boring words of the cell cycle or the Revolutionary War or the types of verbs only to wake up at 9:00 and finish my notes. After you’ve read the section, or at least skimmed it, you have to set up your structure. Finally, you have to write your notes. You have to somehow make sure to include all of the information in the text, use your own wording, and try to keep it from being 13 pages long, which is an actual number of note pages I have had over one section. So, yeah, notes aren’t that fun.
As you can see, I had a lot to say about homework, and honestly, I still do, but I won’t bore you with yet another page-and-a-half of me complaining about all the time I spend on homework. No, I will spare you the details, but just know that there are many different types of homework and that students have to deal with all of them. So please, cut us some slack.

Labrynth

By Ashten Elliott]

A random moving maze in which players move around the maze and move the maze itself in order to obtain treasure, that is the idea behind Ravensburger’s labyrinth. Labyrinth is Ravensburger’s most popular game and has spawned over 60 different versions and iteracions. The game is played with up to four people who attempt to escape the labyrinth by finding certain items before the other players do. Throughout the game you can manipulate the board by changing tiles in order to make the path you’re on quicker and easier or you can use it to block opponents from reaching the treasure before you. Thanks to this way of play no two games will be the same unless you try to make them the same so if you like games where you have to think about your moves and with a bit of randomness I would recommend playing labyrinth. If you want a game of labyrinth but want less freedom of movement and simpler game play(sounds worse but is still a lot of fun ) than you will want 3-d labyrinth. This version of labyrinth has the same goal of collecting things but is different in the sense that the labyrinth is 3-d and instead of changing any part of the labyrinth you change the middle by sliding the middle panel. This new version of play allows for more competition and more planning so if that’s what you want you might want to check out 3-d labyrinth. These only two of all the different types of labyrinth so if these didn’t sound like your thing there is probably a different version that you’d like. Overall from what I’ve played of these games they were really fun and relatively easy to get a hang of.

Fish

By Dianna Schild

Fish are amazing creatures and sometimes we all wonder how they can all breath underwater. Fish have scales, most animals have fur but fish do not. In order to survive, they must be in the water at all times. The way that they can breath underwater is by they have gills. All fish have gills that flow the water out of there system. According to the internet on what they have to say about fish. “Fish are gill-bearing aquatic craniate animals that lack limbs with digits. They form a sister group to the tunicates, together forming the olfactory. Included in this definition are the living hagfish, lampreys, and cartilaginous and bony fish as well as various extinct related groups.”. And there you go. Fish come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and shades. Some are big some you can’t even see. Some may even be very dangerous. They are a cool creature and there atmosphere and habitat are really cool as well.

Basketball Sneakers Giving Sportswear Brands A High Reputation

By Tess Lampe
Sportswear has always been a sales category that has given certain brands much success. In recent years, basketball sneakers and clothing has become a top priority to many sportswear brands, mainly because they are the most bought things from them. Puma, a widely known brand that was founded by a German man by the name of Rudolf Dassler, has made sure to make connections to the category of basketball through the media. Puma has partnered with many influencers such as Jay-Z, Selena Gomez, Meek Mill, and Rihanna to enforce the idea of storytelling and because those influencers are widely known on social media in many places, including Asian markets, which have proved to be very important to Puma and their business.
Puma’s main goal is to with partnering with influencers and cultures is to come back in relevancy after being absent for almost a decade and to tell good stories in the process, “basketball is the sport that most merges with the worlds of culture, hip hop, art, and fashion.” To further this motive, Puma also named one of their pairs of shoes after the NBA Hall of Famer Walt “Clyde” Frazier. Not only that, but Puma has also collaborated with and impacted many other star NBA players in the past such as a Hall of Famer and Detroit Pistons player Isiah Thomas, Skylar Diggins-Smith, Deandre Ayton, Marvin Bagely III, Demarcus Cousins, Rudy Gay, Danny Green, Kevin Knox, Michael Porter Jr., Terry Rozier, Zhaire Smith, and many more. Isiah Thomas, now 57, commented on his experience with Puma basketball shoes, “I won a lot of games in my Pumas. My fondest memories are winning the championship in them and pouring champagne on my head. … I was killing em’ in those shoes.”
Allowing such people to experience what it’s like to use Puma shoes in game and showcasing it in media with influencers and NBA stars has done exactly what Puma has wanted it to do, increase relevance in sports and tell a good story, specifically a basketball story, in the process. However, many other brands, despite them being more popular over the years, have become large in the sports industry. To compete with the dominating brands such as Nike and Adidas, Puma has tried to connect with the younger and more elite audience of not only basketball, but sports in general. Adam Petrick, director of global brand and marketing at Puma, said, “We have to be developing highly technical products that cater to the needs of elite athletes.”
Additionally, Puma has proven to be the fastest growing sports brand in the world after making a 17% sales increase, and to do that, they make sure to appeal to places like China and Asia as a whole. As mentioned before, many of the influencers Puma has partnered with are widely known in Asian markets, Puma holds them close. Asia, especially East Asia, is Puma’s fastest growing area with a sales growth of about 28.5%. To comment on this, Adam Petrick said, “We are working to understand the mindset of the consumer there, to understand what’s interesting to that consumer and providing relevant storytelling around our products that they want to buy into our brand.” All of these sales have been coming quickly from sportswear, especially due to Puma’s great storytelling, as mentioned by Petrick, towards the NBA and basketball as a whole.
Adam Petrick concluded with this statement, “Anything we can do to be relevant to our consumers, to give them something to talk about and to think about. It’s about finding the right people,” In recent years, as proven by the statistics shown by sales growth, Puma has shown great perseverance and appreciation when noticing their increasing popularity throughout the years after being barely known at all. Therefore, the outcome and continuous journey they bring themselves and their audiences on is worth it in the end as they carry on with releasing their best work.
