Clarksville School Buildings Need Air Conditioning

By: Kori Wedeking

Clarksville Schools are in major need of air conditioning. During the beginning of the school year, it can be very hot outside. The past couple months have been extremely warm outside. It feels even hotter in the school. Not only do students hate the heat of the school, but teachers also hate the heat. Investing in air conditioning for our school would have several benefits for both students and teachers.
Cooler temperatures will improve concentration. When people are exposed to high temperatures, their brain stops concentrating on what it needs to concentrate on. Instead, their brain will concentrate on cooling their body down instead. If air conditioning was placed in Clarksville Schools, exam grades and overall grades would improve.
Air conditioning would provide more motivation. Most students in high school do not like coming to school and going to classes. Students hate coming to school even more if the building is uncomfortably hot. By investing in air conditioning, students will not dread attending school as much. They will be more willing to focus on their materials and learn.
Air conditioning also creates better air quality. Air conditioning filters the air and clears toxins from the environment. This will improve the health of both students and staff. Along with this, it can help with allergies. Not only that, but it is proven that cleaner air leads to better grades. What school would not want their students healthier and receiving better grades?
Finally, air conditioning allows tougher more complex lessons. If students and teachers are able to concentrate better because of air conditioning, teachers will be able to create complex lessons and students will be able to comprehend them much better. Without air conditioning, students may become moody and easily frustrated when they do not understand lessons. Better attitudes and behaviors will allow for more advanced learning.
The benefits of air conditioning are endless. Air conditioning leads to higher grades, better attitudes, better behavior, more learning, tougher lesson plans, better health, and more. The only downside to air conditioning is the cost. In my opinion, the benefits of Clarksville Schools investing in air conditioning easily outweigh the downsides. Clarksville Schools, and all schools, should definitely take some time to consider purchasing air conditioning for their students and staff.

Football in Iowa on 9/21

By: Cole Negen

Iowa State took on Louisiana-Monroe in a non-conference matchup in Ames. The Cyclones’ first 2 possessions resulted in 2 turnovers, 1 interception and 1 fumble. Lousiana-Monroe was unable to capitalize however, and then the flood gates opened for the Cyclones. QB Brock Purdy ran the ball in for the first score of the game. The Cyclone defense then pitched in an interception on the following drive, which Purdy once again ran in for another touchdown. Some more good defense forced a turnover on downs which ISU turned into a quick 73 yard touchdown on a pass from Purdy to Tarique Milton on the first play of the 2nd quarter, to make it 21-0 Cyclones. The Warhawks responded with a TD drive of their own. The Cyclones threw on 2 field goals and the Warhawks added another TD, but missed the extra point attempt, to make the halftime score 27-13 Cyclones. The second half was once again all Cyclones, as they poured it on with 6 TDs, including a defensive TD courtesy of Jack Hummel, and a field goal while allowing just one TD in the 3rd quarter. Final score: ISU 72, ULM 20. Iowa State showed off just how electric there offense could be, and the defense despite giving up 20 points showed that they will be a force to be reckoned with when Big 12 conference play roles around. QB Brock Purdy totaled an incredible 6 TDs on the day, 3 rushing and 3 passing. Next week, ISU opens up conference play with a road game against Baylor.
UNI climbed up to #9 on the recent FCS polls, and took on Idaho State this week. Idaho State was the first on the board with a field goal on there first offensive possession, which would be the only scoring in the 1st quarter. Idaho State got some help with a kick catch interference call, giving the Bengals 15 free yards and great field position from the Panther 31. But the Panther defense held strong, once again only giving up a field goal. Both teams defenses played extremely well in the following possessions. UNI was, however, able to throw on a field goal to make the score 6-3 in favor of Idaho State. To open up the second half, both teams had drives stall at around midfield. UNI forced a quick three and out and then had a short, quick drive capped off by a 1 yard Tyler Hoosman run for the first TD of the day and UNI’s first lead. UNI’s defense then once again stepped up and got interceptions on back to back drives, but Idaho State hung in there only allowing 3 points off the 2 turnovers. Idaho State then had a chance to set up a game tying TD drive, but never made it past the first down marker. A false start and some more great Panther defense wrapped up the game. Final score: UNI 13, Idaho State 6. UNI had three interceptions on the day and also showed that they have one of the toughest defenses in the FCS. Next week, they head to Weber State to wrap up non-conference.Strickland, Reese. “247sports.” 247sports, USA Today, 247sports.com/college/iowa-state/Article/Iowa-State-football-Re-al-Mitchell-quarterback-Matt-Campbell-sees-offensive-role-136019908/.

Life as a Sophomore

By: Grace Litterer

Life as a sophomore is not all that interesting. Yep, you heard it right. Don’t let that picture for the cover fool you. Sophomore year is certainly not smiling and waving from your brand new car. It’s the second year of high school. You’re not a freshman, who is hopeful and new to the classes. You’re not a junior, who is being constantly tested for college/life readiness at age 16. And you’re certainly not a senior, who is obsessed with making the best last year. You’re a sophomore. As someone who was a sophomore last year, it’s not all that exciting.
Sophomore life is not being recognized. You aren’t a freshman, thank goodness, cause that was a rough year, but you are still an underclassman. Of course, you know more than the freshman, who are just excited at the prospect of being in high school. Sophomore year is kind of just like hanging on. You are hanging on because you have to. You’re hanging on because you think it’ll be better next year. (Although, as a junior now, you might want to give up that hope because junior year is the most stressful, yet. Definitely more than sophomore year.)
One positive to sophomore year is that you get your drivers’ license. This is exciting, of course. However, then you have to hear every single person who hears you got your license vow that they will stay off the road. “I heard ya got your license. I suppose I’ll have to stay off the road now. I will make sure to warn the people on the sidewalks that you got your license, just in case you run ‘em over.” Sometimes, you just want to say, “Yes, Uncle Gary, I got my license. And I passed Drivers’ Ed with an A. No thanks to you, who can be seen eating, texting, milking a cow, and brushing your teeth while driving down the road.”
Yes, sophomore year does get to be pretty tiring. No, it’s not very interesting. Nonetheless, it’s still one year of your very limited time in high school. The best advice I can give is to enjoy it. You will never have another sophomore year. (Well, unless you are going to college, but that’s a story for another time.)

The Key to Mind Relaxation

By: Tess Lampe

You clear your mind once filled with static as someone slowly repeats something above you. You start to feel as if you are lifting off of the couch you are laying on. The bright light that was once shining down upon you has lifted and you see a beach. You walk towards it, but you see a blue lawn chair in the distance just before the waves. As you begin to sit down, you turn around with the feeling that someone is watching you. You see someone where you entered this mysterious beach. They say something to you quietly, and then louder, “Wake up, wake up!” Your eyes flutter open as you wiggle your arms and legs to feeling. This is what it may feel like to be hypnotized.
Hypnosis, also known as hypnotherapy or hypnotic suggestion, is a widespread practice that many therapists use with their patients to break bad habits or to gain a positive change out of something. Many people are led to believe that hypnosis comes from some type of magic or it is a gift within the hypnotizer. In reality, hypnotherapy is a skill in which one puts another into a deep concentration where they are more vulnerable or easy to be swayed in one direction or another. Contrary to another popular belief, when the patient is well-rested, they do not fall asleep during the session. As mentioned before, hypnotic suggestion puts a person into deep concentration and uses a great amount of imagery, which allows the patient to visualize or create an image in their head. This further allows the person in question to relax fully.
Because not everything, especially not every coping mechanism, works with each person, hypnosis is not always the right thing for everyone. It is said that the more likely you are to be hypnotized and the more vulnerable you can be, then it is more likely that you will benefit from it.
Techniques used in hypnotherapy include soothing verbals, slow repetition, and mental imagery. These techniques put patients into a “trance-like” state where their mind is relaxed. Hypnosis is also known for being used for those suffering with negative emotions, mood disorders, insomnia, anxiety, stress, etc. Other reasons why it is done include pain control (childbirth, cancer, headaches, dental aches, burns, etc.), hot flashes & menopause (when the ovaries stop producing hormones), change in behavior, side effects of cancer, and previously stated mental health conditions.
With most things, when there are benefits, there are risks that may come with them. They may include headaches, dizziness, drowsiness, anxiety, and the creation of false memories. These things only happen when hypnosis is used in an incorrect or excessive manner.
Self-hypnotization, the practice of hypnosis on one’s self, is not something to be taken lightly, especially when you may not be a professional in that specific field. All of the risks that accompany normal hypnotic suggestion applies to self-hypnosis as well. To actually hypnotize yourself, you need to assure yourself that you want to be hypnotized, you believe in its abilities and have little doubts, you are not frightened by the practice, and that you do not overuse it or see it in too much detail. A key part in this self-practice is that you must know what you want to tell yourself and what kind of message you want to put into your brain. Whatever you are wanting to say to yourself, it must be positive, genuine, and simple. Using the word “I” in your message is important as well because it easily applies to you. Additionally, it is recommended that you tell someone nearby that you are going to perform this practice because then you won’t be disturbed and just in case of an emergency, someone will be near to wake you from your trance. You need to feel relaxed, focused, and your mind needs to be clear. Tell yourself to relax, slowly close your eyes, begin to visualize, and be ready to use your prepared message/statement to yourself. Also make sure to do plenty of research beforehand so you know all of the proper steps to the practice, especially because it can be harder to do it to yourself.
Switching gears a bit, the origin of hypnosis goes back to the years of 1700 with a man named Franz Anton Mesmer, also known as the “father” or the one who birthed the idea of hypnosis. His ideas, as we now know, are definitely not true and are considered nonsense by many, but Mesmer did take the first step in creating modern hypnosis. As a German scientist, Franz believed that each and every body and object had a type of cosmic energy that was transferred between them. Further, he thought that this energy could be harnessed or controlled and used for influencing the behavior of others. As you can gather from the name “Mesmer,” he named this transference or process of controlling another’s energy “mesmerism.” Most people today have heard that word, and now you know where that comes from and how it applies to modern hypnotic suggestion.
Conclusively, hypnosis is more than what today’s people and society believe it to be. There are many ways for one to practice hypnotherapy, in which many benefits and risks come with each of them. Even though it is not for all people, it is something that offers many positive outcomes. If you are stressed or are experiencing some type of pain, hypnosis is a coping mechanism that may be just what you need.

How Music Affects the Brain

By: Morgan Jacobs

Music can impact us in many ways. This impact can be positive and make us feel we are on top of the world. We can also be impacted negatively by feeling upset or sad. Music can make us feel a lot of different emotions all at once, but what is the effect of listening to music on the brain.
Two UCF professors, Kimbinobu Sugaya (neuroscientist) and Ayako Yonetani (world-renowned violinist), started teaching a course at The Burnett Honors College called “MUsic and the Brain” which teaches students how music impacts the brain. In the class they teach that music can change your ability to perceive time, can tap into primal fear, reduces seizures, makes you a better communicator, makes you stronger, can boost your immune system, assist in repairing brain damage, make you smarter, evoke memories, and can help parkinson's patients. While listening to music, different parts of your brain are doing many things all at once. Listed below is a photo of the brain that shows what part of the brain does what when listening to music.
Listening to different genres of music can impact us in different ways. For example, classical music enhances dopamine secretion (Dopamine Secretion is the release of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is released to make you feel good.), synaptic function (The process in which one neuron communicates with another.), learning, and memory. Heavy metal music elicits a sense of identity and a knack for community. Rap music stimulates emotion, language, motivation, motor function, and processing by being in a “flow state”/zone. Pop and rock music improves endurance and enhances physical performance, but it can also easily distract you while working. Lastly, listening to jazz helps to sooth the body.
In a study done by Ashford University, The most popular type of music to listen to while working among students is types of music like the blues, gospel, christisn, metal, pop, and avantgarde by 25.8%. The next most popular genres is country and classical music which makes up 12.9%. This is lead by ambient and R and B (9.7%), Electronic/trance and rock (6.5%), and jazz, soul folk/americana, easy listening, and meditative(3.2%).
Today there are many different ways to enjoy music whether that is on Spotify, Pandora, Youtube, SoundCloud, and many more. All it takes to find these music resources is a quick Google search. Music plays such a big part to affect our brains by helping us all to learn and grow to find what we like.

What the different parts of the brain are doing when listening to music.

Adventure Time

By: Ashten Elliott

Do you remember when cartoon network had live action shows and horribly produced animated ones (to this day I still get flashbacks) the network had entered dark times indeed until in April of 2010 Adventure Time was released it was a big hit and soon other great shows began to appear so the network cancelled the old stuff and let a renaissance begin, without adventure time and shows like it I doubt the network would still be running so let's talk about card wars the land of Ooo’s version of yugioh. But first I’ll tell you about the show, for starters the show had a run time of eight years and had ten seasons, the show follows the adventures of finn the last known human in the world of Ooo and his brother Jake who is a shapeshifting dog. The first few seasons are about Finn and Jake exploring the land of Ooo with their group of friends including but not limited to the queen of vampires, the elemental of candy (which is an element now apparently) who is also a princess, the elemental of fire who is also a princess, a psychic tandem war elephant, god, the reincarnation of the lich, and an insane ice mage who saved the world from complete destruction. The other seasons are story oriented which is where most of that stuff comes from some of the things that happen include Fin killing the lich who is the embodiment of evil who plunged the world into a post apocalypse, finding the other humans, and defeating Golb who is pure chaos and so powerful that he could destroy the world and is immune to being destroyed by the crown of the ice king which can grant any wish. So this show is easily one of my favorites and when I heard they made card wars from one of my favorite episodes of the show I had to play it. The game is a turn based card game that can have a stupid amount of strategy in it. The game is played by taking turns playing cards in order to defeat your opponent and their cards. Each person gets two actions and a draw to play their cards and deplete their opponents twenty health. The game is really fun and is great for fans.

The Importance of Lifting

By Kori Wedeking

Exercise and lifting is a big part of everyone’s lives, especially young athletes. Not everyone believes or thinks that lifting is needed, but there are several proven benefits of strength training.
Lifting ensures that young athletes will develop motor skills, understand the mechanics of your muscles, and become more coordinated. Lifting one-hundred percent improves your ability to play sports and be successful in sports. Along with this, lifting also reduces the risk of injuring. While lifting, athletes learn the proper form and technique of weight training. Gaining muscle and proper technique prevents injuries from occurring on the field, court, track, course, etc.
An obvious benefit of lifting is increasing strength. Muscular strength has a lot of value in every single sport. The more strength you have, the more dominant you will be compared to your competition. Another benefit is self-esteem. Studies have connected strength training to an increase in positive self-image, high self-esteem, and self-confidence. By lifting, you can surprise yourself and learn how strong you truly are. For example, if a track athlete is used to lifting heavy weights in the weight room, throwing the shot put at meets will be a piece of cake.
Along with these benefits, there is the benefit of adding variety to activities. It is easy for young athletes to get burned-out and tired of doing the same sport constantly. By lifting, there is a change of pace and change of activity. Although an athlete is not getting better in a specific sport, they are still getting better when they lift because they are getting stronger.
Lifting is not the most fun. It can be hard to challenge yourself in the weight room. It can be difficult to mentally stay focused and lift some days. It is important for young athletes to understand the benefits of lifting, that way they feel motivated to actually lift hard. If athletes push through and get a good lift in a few times a week, their sports performance will definitely improve.

Benefits of Sports

By Katie Stirling

Students who choose to go out for sports in high school might have many different reasons. They might want to stay in shape, spend more time with their friends, and/or just love playing the sport. These are all different benefits of participating in high school sports.
Participating in sports provides many health benefits for students. When you are getting the right amount of activity every day, you will feel more physically fit. Staying in shape might have a more positive impact on your body than some people realize. Staying hydrated, eating healthy foods, and getting the right amount of sleep are all things some students might take more seriously if they were out for a sport. Of course, you don’t have to do these things while on a sports team, but they tend to help you gain progress.
Another benefit of sports is spending more time with your friends. We all know the school year can get very busy at times. With less free time to spend with your friends, being on a team can make up for that time. You would get to see them everyday at practice, spend time on the bus with them to away games, and enjoy making progress and getting better together throughout the season.
Many people believe the main reason someone should participate in a sport is if they truly enjoy playing it. While this might not be true for all student athletes, it is very true for some of them. Playing a sport you love gives you a great amount of joy and satisfaction. It can give people something to look forward to during the day.
Playing sports during high school can give students many benefits. Staying in shape, spending more time with your friends, and playing the sport you love are just some of the reasons why students go out. It can give you memories that you’ll never forget and moments you’ll never want to let go of.

College Football in Iowa 9/14

By Cole Negen

In Ames #19 Iowa took on Iowa State for the Cy-Hawk trophy. Iowa started up the game with a long, 15 play drive that ended with a field goal. Iowa State responded with a little trickeration, with a double pass from La’Michael Petteway to Deshaunte Jones for the games first touchdown. Shortly after the game was stopped in its first lightning delay. The delay lasted about 50 minutes. Play resumed for a short bit before another delay came, this one close to 2 hours in length. When play resumed again, both teams defenses looked very impressive, the only score a 40 yard field goal from Keith Duncan as time expired in the first half, making the halftime score 7-6 in favor of the Cyclones. Due to the delays halftime was shortened, and it didn’t take long for the Cyclones to find the endzone again. On the second play from scrimmage out of halftime, Brock Purdy found Tarique Milton for a 73 yard TD throw to make it 14-3 Iowa State. Iowa responded with yet another long drive but once again only was able to get a field goal out of it. Their defense gave them a boost with a quick 3 and out. Iowa State backed up into their own endzone got only a 34 yard punt, giving the Hawkeyes great field position. QB Nate Stanley then lead a masterful drive from Iowa State territory, in which he capped off with a 1 yard TD plunge to give the Hawkeyes their first lead of the game. Iowa failed a 2 point conversion, making the score 15-14 Iowa. Iowa State took back the lead with a field goal, which the Hawkeyes responded with a field goal of there own 18-17. Iowa State then had a potential go ahead TD drive going until a false start set back the drive and the Hawkeye defense stiffened, forcing a turnover on downs. Iowa failed to do anything with their potential game sealing drive and was forced to punt. On the ensuing punt, Iowa State’s jammer ran into the returner as he tried to field the ball resulting in a fumble which the Hawkeyes recovered. A couple of kneels and the game was over. Final score: #19 Iowa 18, Iowa State 17.
The game in total took about 6 hours to complete. Iowa State loses its 5th straight game against the Hawkeyes.

Why Getting a Dog is Worthwhile

By Ainsley Lovrien

Owning a dog is one of the best things you could possibly own. Having a pet, like a dog, can teach kids about responsibility when your kids have to help walk, bathe, and feed the dog, they are learning the important skill of taking care of another living creature. Dogs help the immune system: there was one study which showed that babies which are raised in a dog-owning homes are less susceptible to colds and respiratory infections.Dogs keep kids exercising: too many kids these days would rather sit home on the couch playing video games; if your family has a dog, though, it gives your children a great excuse to get outdoors and keep them active. When you have a dog in your home, you can bet on a reduced chance of a break in or robbery. Dogs are great for protecting against robbers and are always on guard, ready to bark or defend their family since they are very protective-especially of kids in the house. Robbers are less likely to strike because they know a dog will warn their owner, attack them, or significantly reduce their chance of making off with goods. A dog is also good for your health. According to the American Heart Association, owning a dog may help everyone in your family by decreasing the risk of developing heart disease.Because you will be walking your dog as a family, you’ll all gain more exercise. And, you’ll develop a strong bond with your pet, which decreases stress (more exercise and less stress = a healthier heart. In my family, I am working on getting another dog for inside my house and I needed to pick between some puppies. I had a really hard time deciding, because of cost, how big the dog will get, and of course how cute it is. After hearing many different responses, I finally made a survey to see what the entire high school and junior high have to say which one would be the best. Finally, the most voted one was the white maltese, but second was the yorkie and the maltese costs more than the yorkie. Now, I think my mind is made.

Life as a Freshmen

By Grace Litterer

Continuing with the theme, I thought I would do life as a freshman. Freshman year is certainly an interesting time. Freshman year is the first year of high school. Of course, it comes with new experiences. As someone who was a freshman only a few years ago, I remember it being a lot to contend with. Considering that this week is homecoming week at Clarksville, the topic is, of course, homecoming. Freshman year is the first year that you are able to participate in homecoming, or at least go to the dance. Of course, there a few stereotypical freshmen that show themselves during homecoming week.
One of them is, of course, the Very Eager Go-Getter. This is the freshman that goes all out. They get five Halloween costumes for five different dress-up days. This person would dye their hair five different times if it meant that their outfit for the day is on point. The easiest way to spot the enthusiastic freshmen is to look for them on Spirit Day. They likely have their entire face painted maroon and white for the occasion. They are quick to organize a class dinner before the dance or delegate jobs to different people for the hallway. If nothing else, you can say they are enthusiastic.
The other one is the Nervous No-Getter. Now, in all truthfulness, I was the Nervous No-Getter during my freshman year. This person is pretty easy to spot, too. This is the person that refuses to dress up. They don’t want to participate in games. They don’t want to do the Car Cram or the Scooter Races. Most of all, they absolutely do NOT want to go to the homecoming dance. There is no way that they will dance. In fact, if they do show up, it is only for the snack table, or because their parents made them. As someone who was once a Nervous No-Getter, here’s some advice. The dance isn’t a big deal, and the games and dress up days are meant for you to have fun. If you spend your time hating it, you will be too distracted to have fun.
In conclusion, these types of freshmen show themselves every year. It’s something that you can count on. In the midst of all the homecoming activities, you can always see the freshmen class, including the Eager Go-Getter and the Nervous No-Getter, bonding, working together to make this homecoming their first, and best, homecoming.

The Healthy Food We've Always Needed

By Tess Lampe

     Celery

A vegetable that most people had as a kid accompanied by peanut butter, right? Little do most people know that the vegetable that is celery is actually one of the healthiest you can have, and that is true for many reasons. Not only is celery filled with nutrients, it also has a very miniscule amount of calories, it often benefits a select few of the inner systems of your body, and most surprisingly, celery is used in pain-relieving medicine quite often. To say the least, it is a vegetable that the common people forgot about, but nutritionists have always kept it on their lists of healthy snacks.
Celery is a vegetable that belongs to the plant family of Apiaceae, which usually consists of aromantic flowering plants. Other plants that are in this family include the previously mentioned celery, carrots, parsley, and umbellifers. An umbellifer is essentially a commonly used umbrella term for flowering plants that are apart of the Apiaceae family. When it comes to umbellifers, pollinators are closely tied to them because of the great attraction they have towards the abundant amount of nutrients. The pollinators that tend to attract themselves towards the umbellifers are hoverflies, bees, butterflies, and other flies.
Celery is known for being low in calories and very rich in nutrients and health benefits, which is why many people include it in their diets. Not only does this certain vegetable help to improve many bodily systems like the digestive and cardiovascular system, the seeds in celery are also used in many pain-relieving medicines. It can also be served in many ways and it often withholds its nutrients through most of those processes. Based on a study from the journal LTW - Food and Science Technology, when celery is steamed, about 83-99% of the antioxidants - compounds in food and in your body that defend cells from anything harmful - stay in the vegetable. However, when blanched or boiled, about 38-41% of the antioxidants within the vegetable are lost.
Even though celery is full of nutrients, it isn’t quite packed full with a certain mineral. Nutritionist Megan Ware says that “Since celery is mostly made of water, it is not particularly high in any vitamin or mineral.” Despite this fact, there is actually a moderate amount of vitamin K in celery (30% in one cup). Vitamin K is a vitamin that mainly focuses on regulating blood calcium levels and bone metabolism, which can also be related to blood clotting.
Health benefits of celery can include weight loss, anti-inflammatory effects, hydration, being a remedy for heartburn, helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure, regulates bowel and digestive movements, and the antioxidants and variety of nutrients can help with reducing cancer risk. Despite the many benefits, there are a few risks to eating too much celery. It has a high sodium/salt level, which can be a danger or worry to some under certain circumstances. Additionally, because of the low amount of calories in celery, it could cause malnutrition if eaten too much. Malnutrition, although seeming ironic when talking about this specific vegetable based on previous statements, is when the body does not receive proper nutrition from not eating enough of the right foods, not being able to properly digest, or not eating enough in general.
Other health concerns with celery may be allergies, interference with thyroid functions when eaten in large quantities, and temporarily causing skin to be more sensitive to UV rays if applied directly to the skin.
Nevertheless, as long as celery and many other vegetables from the Apiaceae family are used and eaten properly and used in each individual’s desired diet in the correct way, celery can be a great food with many health benefits that could help many who need it.

What is 4-H and How Did it Start?

By Morgan Jacobs

When thinking about different extracurriculars, our minds usually go to sports, band, choir, and many more. One extracurricular that is common among some people is 4-H. According to the official 4-H page, 4-H is defined as, “ … the power of young people. We see that every child has valuable strengths and real influence to improve the world around us.” When 4-H was originally started in the late 1800’s, it was made as a way to introduce new agricultural technology to communities. The goal was to have the idea of a practical and “hands - on” learning experience for all 4-Hers. The idea of having a practical and “hands - on” learning came from wanting to connect school education and country life together. The first step to making 4-H was by building community clubs to help solve agricultural challenges by learning about the industries in their community.
In 1902, A.B. Gram started the first 4-H club was known by “The Tomato Club” and by the “Corn Growing Club” in Clark County, Ohio. That same year T.A. Erickson of Douglas County, Minnesota also started local after school agricultural clubs and fairs. About eight years later in 1910, Jessie Field Shambaugh from Page County, Iowa developed the clover pin with the three H’s. The three H’s stood for Head, Hands, and Heart.
Two years later in 1914, the Smith-Lever Act was passed and created the Cooperative Extension System at USDA. (The Cooperative Extension System is a partnership of the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) within the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), more than 100 land-grant universities and more than 3,000 county offices across the nation. Cooperative Extension combines the expertise and resources of federal, state, and local governments and is designed to meet the need for research, knowledge and educational programs.) This also nationalized 4-H as 4-H and not 3-H. The fourth H was added and stood for Health. By 1924, the clover was adapted and 4-H clubs were formed.
Today, 4-H serves youth is rural, urban, and suburban communities and 4-Hers and tackling many national issues from global food security, climate change, and many more topics. 4-H today is also in communities in every state across the nation and gives the youth a wide variety of STEM opportunities from agricultural to robotics and much more. In 4-H, their is nearly 6 million people who participate in 4-H. Roughly, 1.8 of these people live in an urban area, 1.6 million live in a suburban area, and 2.8 million people live in a rural area. There is also about 500,000 volunteers and 3,500 4-H professionals helping all 6 million 4-Hers.
I personally am a part of the BUtler BB’s 4-H Club in Butler County and believe that 4-H is one network that can help youth learn some of the basic fundamentals for school, future jobs, and for the rest of their lives. There are many different and new opportunities when it comes to 4-H as well. Listed below is a source for 4-H and how you can get involved if you are interested. If you are looking for new experiences, more about how things around you work, or even just a way to meet new people, I highly recommend looking into 4-H.

Samurai Jack

By Ashten Elliott

One of my favorite shows of all time is Samurai Jack, the art, action, and the story has always made this one of my favorites. The show was created by Gendy Tartavosky in 2001 and ended in 2017 there were four seasons before the creators took a break until finishing the show in 2017. The show itself was a quiet action-oriented show that followed the journey of Samurai Jack attempting to return to the past after being thrown into a dystopian future by Aku. Jack is a quiet thoughtful samurai who is 75 years old and travels looking for a way to get back to his time to slay Aku, Aku is a demonic powerful entity so powerful that the gods fear him and bestow a legendary blade to Jack to slay him. Jack and Aku aren’t the only characters however as the show also has some of the most memorable characters of all time, characters like Sir Rothchild(a speaking dog archeologist), monkey man(a primitive man who teaches Jack how to jump hundreds of feet in the air), and the Scotsman( Jack’s best bro) those are just a few characters. In the fifth season, the show was allowed to be darker as it was on adult swim. In the fifth season, Jack finally returns to the past kills Aku and marries Aku’s daughter who immediately dies(the last season was meh). So this amazing series has to have a board game, I present to you Samurai Jack: Back to the Past. In this game, Jack is trying to get back to the past to slay Aku with the help of his friends. The game has four playable characters (Scotsman, Ashi, Sir Rothchild, and monkey man) this means that you can have a lot of players at one time. The game is played by going around board collecting cards to gain points by defeating the villain, Jack and Aku are also included as NPCs they influence the player's cards and points. Jack also has a sanity meter if it fills everyone's loses. Overall the game is decent it can be fun but gets repetitive quickly, however, the cards and characters are well done and collectible for fans, I would say that if you’re looking for a game it’s not bad but there are better but if you’re a fan of the series it’s a must-have.

Four Queens or Dairy Queen?

By Janet Borchardt

Earlier this year, Four Queens moved into Waverly and created a difficult choice for people in the area to make of where to go for ice cream. I personally believe that Four Queens is the place to go for their homemade cones and sundaes, but Dairy Queen will always be the location to get a good blizzard but I’ve never been able to quite choose one as the superior place. After looking into this further, I’ve discovered that many people at Clarksville Schools have strong opinions on which ice cream spot is their favorite.
First, for Four Queens. Carter Leerhoff, an employee and avid supporter has quite the statement to make. “We are more environmentally friendly. We don’t waste and we recycle. There’s a larger variety on the menu, with more ice cream flavors and items. We are a small business that cares about employees and customers, as opposed to a chain like Dairy Queen.”
Teacher Katie Wedeking also sided with Carter. She states, “Four Queens has a more genuine taste and has homemade options. It also doesn’t melt as fast.”
For Dairy Queen, Ainsley Lovrien mouth-wateringly states, “Dairy Queen has a better quality blizzard. It has a great texture. Whenever I’m in line, I can’t wait to see that cup flip and know it’s mine.”
Grace Litterer adds, “Dairy Queen uses fudge in their blizzards, but Four Queens does not. That’s a must-have.”
Finally, Chloe Ross states, “Dairy Queen has the option of royal blizzards, which is when the middle is filled with hot fudge or something similar. Four Queens can’t top it.”
But what does Clarksville really think? After a survey was conducted with grades 7-12, it was revealed that Dairy Queen is the most popular ice cream spot. However, the vote ended up tallying 59-52, showing that they both are pretty good places, after all.

Homecoming Week

Homecoming Week

Everyone knows that homecoming week is one of the busiest during the school year. Each class has a lot to get done. Between setting up hallways, preparing skits, and working together, you could say it gets chaotic.
Things can get very competitive during homecoming week. Each class wants to be better than the other classes. When it comes to hallways, it can get complicated. First, you have to decide what your hallway theme is going to be. The majority of the class has to agree and decide together. Once you have your theme, you have to start deciding what you need to bring. When you have all your materials, you can start putting decorations together. This is when it gets tricky. A lot of the time, things won’t go as planned. Either the decorations don’t stay together, or they don’t turn out how you imagined. It takes effort and agreement to make a successful hallway.
Another difficult thing to manage is coming up with a skit. Deciding what you want the skit to be about can be hard. Not everyone is going to agree. If you are making a video, you have to decide when the best time for everyone is to film. Most of the time the skits are going to be funny, so you want to make sure you have a creative script. Making or buying costumes also takes creativity. Filming or acting out a skit can be hard, but with the right amount of work it can turn out great.
All of the things about homecoming week take togetherness. Working together can be hard when it comes to each individual class. Sometimes people don’t get along as well as they usually do. When people disagree, they might get mad at another person. This is when majority vote comes in handy. Whatever most of the class wants is what everyone will get. When people work together, they get stuff done.
As you can see, there are several different parts to homecoming week. Setting up hallways, making skits, and working together are all different factors. Homecoming isn’t only difficult, but also fun. You get to have a little time off from class, play games, and be creative with your friends.

College Football in 8/7

The #20 Iowa Hawkeyes opened up conference play this year in a matchup against Rutgers. Iowa opened up the game with a quick score on a 58 yard TD from Nate Stanley to Ihmir Smith-Marsette, to quickly make it 7-0 Iowa. Both teams went back and forth trading punts, until the start of the 2nd quarter, where Iowa went on an 11 play touchdown drive capped off by a TD reception by Tyrone Tracy, a redshirt freshman who came into the program last year as a running back, and is now a receiver. The Hawkeye defense then got a quick 3 and out, followed by a 46 yard field goal by Keith Duncan, and then on the ensuing Rutgers drive, got an interception from Djimon Colbert, which they once again turned into a field goal. The halftime score was 20-0 in favor of the Hawkeyes. Both defenses came out of the locker room ready to go, each team holding each other to a couple of empty possessions, until Stanley once again found Smith-Marsette, this time from 23 yards out. Iowa then got an interception from Michael Ojemudia on the next drive, which they turned into a field goal, making it 30-0 Iowa, which is where the score remained for the rest of the game. Final Score: #20 Iowa 30, Rutgers 0. Iowa moved up to #19 on the AP Poll and will head to Ames this week to play Iowa State in the Cy-Hawk game.
UNI took on the Southern Utah Thunderbirds in there home opener at the UNI-Dome. Both teams failed to put up any points to begin with, until late in the 1st quarter when Will McElvain hooked up Deion McShane for a 56 yard score. SU then proceeded to put a nice possession together, but missed the field goal, which the Panthers took advantage of, this time McElvain finding Isaiah Weston for the 39 yard TD grab. The Panthers then forced back to back three and outs to end the half which there offense turned into a field goal and a TD to make it 24-0 at the half. That would be a trend for the rest of the game as UNI put up defensive stop after defensive stop to make the score 34-0. The Thunderbirds finally got on the board with an 11 play drive capped off by a 4 yard TD run by Chris Helbig. UNI then had a pair of fumbles on back-to-back drives, but the Thunderbirds were not able to capitalize. SU threw on a late TD to make the final score UNI 34, Southern Utah 14. UNI has looked very impressive to begin the new year, with there triple overtime thriller against Iowa State and now the dismantling of Southern Utah. They will have Idaho State at home next Saturday.

Life as an 8th Grader

By Grace Litterer

Everyone has been through those years, those middle school years. How would one even describe the middle school years, except to say that they aren’t fun? This is especially true for 8th-grade year. Eighth grade is a rough year. You have been in middle school for one or two years now and you are expected to know things, to be the leader, but no one really knows anything.
Seventh graders are hard to deal with during your eighth-grade year. They are the newest members of the middle school-high school hallways, and often have a hard time making their way through the crowds of people. Now don’t get it wrong, it’s fun to have someone younger than you, someone who doesn’t know as much about the teachers, doesn’t know as much about high school students, and just doesn’t know as much in general. Of course, THAT'S fun, but seventh graders give the middle school a bad rap. It’s hard to be an 8th grader.
Also, this is the first year that you have to care about things, like what classes are you going to take in high school, what do you want to do after that, how do you maintain good grades. You always get the same speeches from your teachers, too. The classic is “You guys are eighth-graders. You should know better by now. You set an example for the younger ones.” Although if you think about it, you hear that in every grade. It’s a classic teacher lecture. “You should know better. You set an example.” Apparently, I have been setting an example since the first grade, and, as a junior in high school, I still don’t know what I am supposed to know better.
Of course, as an eighth-grader, it’s fun to be bigger, stronger, and smarter than the 7th-graders. That’s should be expected. However, almost every 8th grader I’ve talked to would trade it all in for some respect from the high schoolers. It’s a rough time as a middle schooler, especially if you’re in 8th grade. To all the high schoolers out there: Be lenient with the 8th graders. As only 13 and 14-year olds, they are already expected to get some responsibility. It’s hard enough being lectured about setting examples for the 7th graders, who admittedly, are as clueless as penguins in the desert. And if you feel yourself about ready to be mean to a middle schooler, remember how rough your middle school years were.

Suicide Among Teens and Young Adults

By Morgan Jacobs

Please be aware that this article may not be suitable for everyone due to the topic that is going to be discussed. If you or someone you know has talked about contemplating suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
National Suicide Prevention Week is this week from the eighth to the fourteenth of September. Suicide is a tough topic to talk about. I think a lot of people shy away from this topic because of the fact that it is tough and a little awkward to talk about, but I also think that it is a topic that should be more openly discussed about so people are more aware of suicide.
Earlier this year, the American Medical Association published in their journal a report over suicide saying that suicide has become the second ranked leading cause of death for people from the age of 15 to 24. With over 6,200 people dying from suicide in 2017, it falls just short of the leading cause of death for people aged from 15 to 24, which is motor vehicle accidents with 6,697 lives claimed.
Researchers say that suicide might be connected to the opiod crisis. This is due to the fact that added stressors are linked to addiction. At the moment, researchers also do not know all the causes leading to suicide, but are working to pin point more factors of suicide.
Statistics show that in 2017, 11.8 deaths per 100,000 adolescents for people aged from 15 to 19. From 2000 to 2017, there is almost a 4 person difference with only 8 deaths per 100,000 people in 2000.(Rates can be found by looking at Chart 1 below) For 20 to 24 years olds suicide rate was 17 deaths per 100,000 with an increase from 2000, which was 12.5 deaths per 100,000 people. (Rates can be found by looking at Chart 2 below)
Some prevention measures that the CDC recommends is to limit access to prescription drugs at home, look for dramatic changes (Changes in sleep, social relationships, etc.), and changes in substance use. Changes in substance use could also mean the use of social media. While social media can lead to depression and anxiety, it can also be used to help others contemplating suicide and can help loved ones pick up signs from the person.

If you or someone you know has talked about contemplating suicide, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Monopoly

By Ashten Elliott

One of my favorite card games is Monopoly: Deal. The game is a card game based on the classic Monopoly board game made in 1935 by Parker Brothers the game has been a household name for years. Monopoly can have virtually infinite versions whether they have different themes or play styles the game is always changing which may be why it’s so popular. Since there is a version for everyone that means you have at least tried monopoly even if you don’t like board games you may like the Golden Girls edition. Back to the main focus of this article monopoly deal is a very good card game as I said it is basically just a new play style of monopoly the game can be played with two to five players each starting with five cards and drawing two every turn with a maximum of seven cards kept in your hand. Cards in this game can be either action cards allowing you to trade cards take other players' money cards (like landing on an owned property in the original game) or other things. The second card type is money unlike in the original game you don’t buy things with this money you use it to pay others so that they don’t take your property with action cards. Finally, there are the property cards that work like properties in the original except you just draw them and play them. To win the game you need to be the first to gain three property sets so all two, three, or four cards of the same color to win. Your turn starts by drawing you can then play any three cards in your hand, so I could collect 5 million dollars from you then play a property card then steal one of your properties with an action card. Overall the game is very fun when playing with two players, but I find the best games include three to four players so that there is more variety. I recommend getting this game it is only five dollars and it’s a fun and quick game to play with friends or family.

Junior College Fair

By Cheyenne Behrends

The Junior class had to start thinking about their futures today. Mrs. Poppe took the Junior class down to the Mcleod Center at UNI to explore all types of colleges. The College Fair had many things to offer. They could ask questions, explore many types of majors, and also meet new people! Just to name a few colleges that were there: Drake University, University of Northern Iowa, University of Iowa, Central College, Iowa Lakes College, Hawkeye Community College, Luther College, and Simpson College. There were many more different ones as well. “The admission guides really helped us answer whatever questions we had. They really knew everything that they were talking about.” Said a Junior.
Many of the Clarksville students loved University of Iowa. They had many majors and minors to offer. They also had a pretty big campus, which many of the students liked. A couple other students loved the University of Northern Iowa. One student in particular pointed out that they had thirty-three different kinds of ice cream flavors! That was the choosing factor for that student!
All in all, the Junior class had a really good day today at the Mcleod Center. Some students are already starting to plan visits, others are starting to decide what they would want their major/minor to be. If you have a student/kid that is curious about colleges, or just want to know more information about a certain college, then I highly recommend to take them here!

Choosing a College

By Kori Wedeking

Making decisions can be hard. One of the hardest decisions to make is deciding what college to attend after high school. Choosing what college to attend can affect so much in your life while you attend that college and even after you graduate. There is a lot of pressure on eighteen year olds to make the right choice. Although it can be hard, there are many things that you can do and several steps that you can take to help you find the perfect fit.
According to U.S. News, there are tons of steps that all high school students should follow before making a final decision on college. One step is to be mindful of debt. Everyone knows that college costs a ton of money and almost everyone graduates college with debt. So, when selecting a college, it is smart to consider which colleges have low tuition and which ones will offer you the most scholarships. Money should not be the number one factor for why you choose a college, but it is definitely something to keep in mind.
You major is a very important factor to consider. It is not wise to attend a college that does not have the major you want to pursue. College is a lot of fun, but in the end, it is about getting a degree in something that will become a career.
Another step is to understand and get to know the extracurriculars you will participate in. For example, if someone wants to play a sport in college, they should get to know the coaches before actually deciding to go there. The same could be said for choir, band, and any other extracurricular activities. It is smart to know what you are committing yourself to before you actually get to college.
Finally, when selecting a college, you should do some soul-searching and go with your gut. Try to figure out what you truly want. Do you want to stay close to home? Do you want to go to a big or small school? What do you want to major in? Do you want to do any extracurriculars? Once you answer questions like these, you should be able to narrow down your options. After that, it is suggested to just go with your gut. Do not over think it too much and simply choose the college that feels like home.

The Megalodon

By Lilly Cobb

Four facts about the largest shark in the world: the Megalodon.

One, The Megalodon can reach 60-70 ft long and weight almost 60 tons. Compared to the biggest great white shark ever with 23 feet long and weighs 3 ½ ton. This makes the Megalodon 3 times longer and 20 times heavier.
Two, The Megalodons teeth are 5-7 inches big. The largest is 7.48 inches. Compared to the great whites teeth which were recorded as the biggest was just under 3 inches. The suggested size for the Megalodon's mouth was 7 feet across.
Three, a Megalodon could eat up to half of a Great Blue Whale. It's said that after the Megalodon would eat the Whale the other half would wash up to shore and there would be some of the Megalodon’s teeth still in it or next to it.
Four, A single tooth to the Megalodon is worth $50k. Five, The Megalodon went extinct 2.6 million years ago but in 2014 they think there is still one roaming the water on the earth.

The Amazon Rain Forest Continues to Burn

By Tess Lampe

After three long weeks, the media has been stormed with information about the fact that the lungs of our planet are wasting away. You may ask why the phrase “lungs of the planet” was previously stated. The Amazon has had that title for years because the trees that grow within it take in carbon dioxide and “breathe” out oxygen, and oxygen is what most living things (including humans) need to breathe. After three weeks of the Amazon burning, the media finally found out about the unfortunate and ongoing event, the news was spread internationally.
The fire that started it all seemed to have begun directly above the country of Bolivia and swiftly spread north to the west side of Brazil. When the investigation of this fire began, a farmhouse was found near the fire, although nobody was found within or around it. Two empty petrol barrels and many empty jerry cans were found at the entrance of the farmhouse. This discovery led to the first possible suspect, even though no specific person is yet found. With this information, it is said that the cause could have been a cattle rancher wanting more Amazonian land, so they tried to burn down a small section of the rainforest. However, this obviously caused a much larger problem.
President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil has created what is known as a “global PR campaign” to give off the impression that everything relating to the burning of the Amazon is under control. During an interview with CNN, Brazil’s foreign master Ernesto Araujo said firmly that “The Amazon is not burning, not burning at all.” Furthermore, the governor of the State of Rondonia (a state in Brazil) also tried to dismiss the “fuss” about the Amazon fires and said that the global talk of the occurrence was just an attempt to “shackle Brazil’s economy.” Many others tried to argue against those who say the fires have caused a crisis, but it is not easy to change to discharge the fact that the Amazon Rainforest may be the most important forest on our planet, and it is burning down.
Many have described this surge of deforestation as “chaos, chaos, chaos.” Not only is the Amazon currently burning down, but Hurricane Dorian is raging on the east coast of the United States, temperatures are increasing quickly and are hitting record highs, coral reefs are dying, glaciers have been melting due to high temperatures, and floods & droughts are increasing in number and intensity all over the world. These things are happening due to what we call climate change, and events like glaciers melting and floods increasing are what we call a climate crisis.
By definition, climate change is “a change in global or regional climate patterns, in particular a change apparent from the mid to late 20th century onwards and attributed largely to the increased levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide produced by the use of fossil fuels.” Climate is defined as “the weather conditions prevailing in an area in general or over a long period,” and crisis is defined as “a time of intense difficulty, trouble, or danger.” Therefore, a climate crisis is when the weather conditions existing in a certain area are changed negatively, which usually causes great danger to a global or regional (local) area.
Many European countries conduct trade with Brazil. Ever since the fires started, nothing was done about them, and when Mr. Bolsonaro put out his statements, many European leaders have threatened to cease trade with South America - specifically Brazil. Due to Mr. Bolsonaro’s previous statements about the fires being under control and about the fires being a matter that concerns only Brazil, nothing is currently being done about the Amazon fire. Mr. Bolsonaro and many other Brazilian officials have claimed have claimed the Amazon as their own and as something that belongs to Brazil and the State of Amazonas that is within Brazil. However, when looked into, the Amazon belongs to this planet, and it needs protecting from the fires and from those who decide to take it for themselves.
The Amazon Rainforest has been on fire for weeks, and despite the nonexistent efforts government officials have been making, we can only hope that someone can help put a stop to it.

Homecoming Week

By Jaelynn Lampe

As we all know, homecoming week starts on Monday. There are a variety of different fun events going on that all students have the opportunity to participate in. On Monday, the girls have their annual powder puff football game at 5:30 pm. The girls get the chance to be coached by some of the guys and football players. They even ordered shirts to keep as memory of being on the team. Tuesday night is coronation where the homecoming court that is made up of the senior class gets to dress up and find out who won homecoming king and queen. That night, each class gets to present their homecoming skit or video that they made and a winner is chosen. Sometimes these are performed live and sometimes the class has a prerecorded video that they show to the crowd. That will start at 7pm. Also that night, is the Volleyball game vs. Dunkerton at Dunkerton at 6 pm. On Thursday, there is a volleyball game being played at Don Bosco at 6 pm. Friday we have homecoming pep rally at 2:45 pm to cheer on the football players that night. Our homecoming football game will be played at North Butler at 7 pm. Saturday night the school is hosting the homecoming dance that is for highschool only. That will be held from 8 pm to 11 pm. Aside from all of the different activities, we are once again doing our dress up days for each day of the week. On Monday, students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite movie character. On Tuesday we have beach attire so students can show up with grass skirts, coconut bras, swimwear (over their normal clothes, of course) and any other item of clothing fitting to a day at the beach. Wednesday, students get the opportunity to dress from any other decade of their choosing. Thursday is twin day or famous duo day. Students can get together with a friend or a group of friends and dress up as duos such as Spongebob and Patrick, batman and robin, shaggy and Scooby, or any other duo that they can think of. Friday is spirit day and students are encouraged to wear their Clarksville gear to support the football team. It’s gonna be a good week filled with many fun things so feel free to participate and most importantly, have fun!

Softball

By Ainsley Lovrien

Softball is a game similar to baseball played with a larger ball (11 to 12 in) on a field that has a base lengths of 60 ft. and a pitcher's mound that ranges from 35-43 ft. away from home plate, and fence ranging from 180 to 220 ft. away from home plate. Softball moves faster than baseball. There is less time for the runner to get to first base before the fielder throws the ball, yet the fielder has less time to field that than the runner running to first base.
The game was invented in Chicago Illinois in 1887 as an indoor game. The name softball was given to the game in 1926, because the ball used to be soft, but now a days the ball is hard. The first tournament was held in 1933 in Chicago Illinois and it spurred the interest of the game. The Amatuer Softball Association of Amercia governs the game in the United States and sponsors the annual World Series championships and sectionals. The World Softball and Baseball Confederation regulates rules in more than 110 countries including the United States and Canada. Women’s fastpitch Softball became a Summer Olympic sports in 1996, but was dropped in the 2012 Olympic Summer Games. Softball will now be reinstated in the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.
There are three types of softball, slow-pitch and fast-pitch, and modified softball. Slow-pitch softball, the ball, which can measure either 11 or 12 inches in circumference depending on gender and league, must arch on its path to the batter, and there are 10 players on the field at once. In fastpitch softball, the pitch is fast, there are nine players on the field at one time, and bunting and stealing bases are permitted. Modified softball restricts the "windmill" wind-up usually used by fastpitch pitchers, although the pitcher is allowed to throw as hard as possible with the restricted backswing.
Softball rules vary somewhat from those of baseball. Two major differences are that the ball must be pitched underhand from 46 ft for men or 43 ft for women as compared with 60.5 ft in baseball and that seven innings instead of nine constitute a regulation game. Softball recreational leagues for children use 11-inch balls until they participate in travel ball around age 12 and adjust to a 12-inch sized ball. The infield in softball is smaller than on an adult or high school baseball diamond but identical to that used by Little League Baseball; each base is 60 ft from the next, as opposed to baseball's 90 ft. In fast pitch softball the entire infield is dirt, whereas the infield in baseball is grass except at the bases and on the pitcher's mound which are dirt. Softball mounds are also flat, while baseball mounds are a small hill. Softballs are pitched underhand, but baseballs are pitched overhand. This changes the arc of the ball when approaching the plate. For example, depending if the pitcher pitches a fastball, in softball the ball would most likely rise while in baseball because the pitcher is on a hill, the ball would drop.
Softball is my favorite sport. I play for Clarksville High School and I am the catcher. I started playing softball at a young age. My coaches were my friend’s dad and my own dad. They are partially why I have the skills to play this sport. My team has made it to state twice now and we have gotten 2nd for those years. I love this game, because it has given me the opportunity to become a leader and be part of an amazing team.

Softball Safety

By Kori Wedeking
Imagine you are playing third base on your high school softball team. You have a feeling that the batter is going to bunt, so you play a little bit farther in towards home plate than you normally do. The pitcher winds up, but the batter does not bunt. Instead, the batter takes a full swing and the ball comes directly at your face. Next thing you know, you are in the hospital with a broken nose and your teeth smashed. Unfortunately, incidences like this happens to softball players all the time, but they can be prevented. More and more players have begun to wear facemasks for their own safety.
Softball is a very quick game. Compared to baseball fields, softball diamonds are very small. Infielders have very little reaction time, especially the pitcher, first baseman, and third baseman. Along with this, today’s technology is extremely good. Newer and more powerful bats are designed and bought every year. That means that softballs will be hit harder and harder, and will continue to come off the bat faster and faster.
I personally think that wearing a facemask should be mandatory, at least for the corners and pitcher. Many people choose to wear a facemask, but some do not. No one expects or thinks that they will get hit in the face by a line drive, but it does happen. 121,802 head and face injuries are estimated to occur annually. I think that it is ridiculous that this many injuries have occurred and yet there is no rule stating that infielders must wear a facemask. A facemask costs somewhere around $30-$40. A line drive to the face could potentially cost you loads of hospital bills and your original set of teeth.
I would recommend all infielders to wear a facemask while playing softball. It prevents tons of injuries and could possibly even improve your game. If you have a facemask, you are not going to be scared to dig in and field a ball. Since there is no rule about facemasks, I think all parents should make their daughters wear them. Who knows when a line drive could come at you or a grounder could take a bad hop, so why not take the simple action of wearing a facemask to prevent any injuries from occurring.

School Lunches

By Katie Stirling

Lunch is an important part of the day. When students are working hard in class and putting their brains to work all day, they look forward to eating a good and enjoyable lunch. Our school lunches at Clarksville could be majorly improved.
The food we have now does not taste the best. There are only a couple of lunches that most students enjoy. It can be very hard to eat the right amount of food you need if you hate doing it. We should be able to enjoy our lunch as much as possible.
The food is also not the healthiest. If we have at least a couple healthier options, it would give students more energy. Healthy food leads to better nutrition and less tiredness. Getting the right quantity and quality of food could potentially improve the way students do in school, leading to better grades.
Some students are very picky when it comes to food. A better variety of options could also be helpful. This can also lead to more energy, better grades, and more, as mentioned above.
One solution many students have taken is bringing their own lunch. This is a good option because you get to eat what you want everyday. You also don’t have to eat it in the lunchroom if you don’t want to. It helps many people out during lunch period.
Although, some students might not take their lunch everyday because of several things. They might not have time, the right food at home, or something might have just gotten in the way. For example, some students take an early bird lifting class. They don’t have time to go home after that class. This means they are stuck with whatever the lunch menu has to offer.
As you can see, having a delicious and healthy lunch is an important part of the school day. It can have a greater effect on students than some people might realize. Let’s call this to attention and work to get better lunches.

Hurricane Dorian

By Dianna Schild

As most of you may know, Hurricane Dorian is making its way to the United States. This hurricane is now a category 4 hurricane and is making its way to the East coast of the Florida state. People are getting ready to evacuate the state of Florida and are boarding there homes. The hurricane has been moving up the East coast lately and has been getting ready to hit Georgia and South Carolina. So, Dorian has been deciding to stay to the East side of Florida causing the hurricane to travel to other states. This hurricane was planted over the Great Bahama Island early Tuesday of last week.
This hurricane has winds of 120mph and can be as powerful as a category 5 hurricane making lots of damage going through.
Just to update what a hurricane is. Hurricanes are quite similar to a tornado but a hurricane has more currant rotation which makes the ocean have bigger waves and have lots more air rotation.
Hurricanes can be as dangerous if not more dangerous than the regular tornado. Causing waves to grow bigger and rain water to flow into peoples homes. All shelves at grocery stores are being swiped all water and bread is being taken along with all generators to power your home. There is not very many canned supplies left. Ge it while you can before you can get it anymore.

College Football in Iowa

By Cole Negen

UNI and #21 Iowa State both kicked off their seasons against one another this weekend in Ames. Both teams defenses showed up ready to go, the score just 3-0 in favor of Iowa State at the end of the first half. The defenses continued to reign supreme in the second half. UNI opened up with a field goal to open up the half, which Iowa State responded to with a touchdown on the next possession. UNI got some handy scoring from their defense with a 53 yard scoop and score by Xavier Williams. In the fourth quarter, Iowa State capped off a 17 play drive to tie the score up 13 all, which it stayed at for the end of regulation. Both teams settled for a field goal in their first OT possession, which included a 49 yard boot from UNI true freshman Matthew Cook, who went 4-4 on the day. Iowa State took little time to score a touchdown in the second OT, which UNI matched with a touchdown of their own thanks to some nifty plays by QB Will McElvain. UNI then opened the third OT with another field goal. Iowa State marched it down to the goal line, where RB Sheldon Croney coughed it up, but was recovered on a game saving play by Brock Purdy, who quickly dove on the ball before UNI defenders could get there. That set up a Sheldon Croney 1 yard touchdown run to seal the game. Final score: #21 Iowa State 29, UNI 26.
In Iowa City, the #20 Iowa Hawkeyes opened up there season with a game against Miami (OH). The scored stayed pretty even in the first quarter, just 10-7 in favor of the Hawks at the end of 1. But then the Hawkeyes took over. Nate Stanley found his rhythm, he finished with 252 yards passing with 3 touchdowns on a 21/30 completion ratio. Mekhi Sargent lead the Hawkeye backfield with 91 yards on 14 carries and a touchdown, and Toren Young threw on a rushing touchdown as well. Oliver Martin, the Iowa City native, made a splash fresh off the transfer portal, catching 1 of Stanley’s 3 TD passes. Miami (OH) struggled getting anything going, as the Hawks played great run defense which was complemented with great secondary play. Final Score: #20 Iowa 38, Miami (OH) 14.

Why Social Media is a Tool

By Ainsley Lovrien

Social Media is one of the biggest parts in people’s lives. Almost all Americans use social media at least a couple times a day. People regularly access a variety of different social media accounts like Facebook, Twitter, Youtube, Instagram, Snapchat, Tik Tok, and many more. An average person uses social media for most of their life more than socializing, eating, or cleaning themselves. Not only do people use social media for personal reasons, but we also use it to find out what’s happening in the world today. The media is a big influencer and spokesperson for everyone in the world. For example, you can find out what’s happening in Europe by just a click of a button.
The news is a big thing on social media, especially Twitter. A lot of news stories are on twitter, like the election, world conflicts, crime, and many more. The news isn’t the only thing you can find on social media, if you are bored, you can look up funny videos, cooking videos, or tv shows/movies. Netflix is a big provider for social media. Netflix has shows and movies that you can watch whenever you have wifi. You can have it on your TV, phone, and computer. Another social media account people often use is Facebook. The young, old, middle generation use Facebook constantly. It’s one of the biggest companies in the world of social media. People spend hours of their day on Facebook, scrolling through feed, watching videos, or posting about their day. Many people that are on Facebook have debates about politics or share many things about politics/world problems today. There are many times that people get very angry with each other on a Facebook post or comment and some are family members, friends, or community members. Social Media is a big influencer today and we don’t always use it for our personal interest, it’s one of the biggest tools we use today.

Life as a 7th Grader

By Grace Litterer

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be the bottom of the barrel, the lowest of the low? Just ask your 7th grader. They will tell you exactly what they think about being a 7th grader.
The first thing they will probably say is that it isn’t what they would call “a good time”. I know it certainly wasn’t for me. One of the worst parts of being a 7th grader is dealing with 8th graders. Eighth graders have just enough power over 7th graders to be obnoxious. Don’t get me wrong, 8th graders have it pretty rough, but it is nothing compared to the plight of a 7th grader. Eighth graders think they are superior. They think they have it all because they are older. Sometimes you just want to tell them to sit-down. It’s not like they weren’t in a 7th grade just a year ago. To all the eighth graders out there, you may be one notch above 7th graders on the totem pole, but you certainly aren’t at the top.
Another horrible thing about being a 7th grader is walking in the hallways. Seventh graders are the shortest and most inexperienced hallway walkers there are. Yes, they do bounce through the hallway, running into unsuspecting high schoolers like it’s an enormous pinball machine. However, there is no need for the highs choolers to swat them away like flies. Don’t get me wrong, even 7th graders know that they aren’t great at making their way down hallways, but they are trying to get places just like the rest of us.
Everyone knows that 7th graders are annoying, even they know they are annoying, but the fact of the matter is is that they are still people. They aren’t flies to be swatted away. They aren’t the metal balls in the great big pinball machine that is a high school and middle school, even though they may resemble it when walking down the hallways. They may be the bottom of the totem pole, but they are part of the totem pole, nonetheless.

Indian Culture in Iowa Continues to Flourish

By Tess Lampe

11,000 years ago.

That’s how long ago humans took their first steps on the territory that is now Iowa. 8,000 years after, the Woodland culture entered Iowa, which was the most dominant culture in Iowa. for about 2,00 years. As time moved along, cultures that were more dependent on agriculture began to replace the Woodland culture, those being Glenwood and Mill Creek in western Iowa and Oneota culture eastern Iowa. Many of these included indigenous people and a large group of villagers near the Mississippi River. When it comes to Oneota culture, those involved in it are believed to be directly ancestral to the Ioway Indians, who were first encountered by European explorers entering Iowa years ago.
Around the time of the 18th century, Indian tribes within Iowa included the Ioway (located in northern, central, and eastern Iowa), and the Sioux (located in northwest Iowa). After the Sauk and the Mesquakie - two other historic Indian tribes - were pushed out of their homelands in Wisconsin, they resettled in western Illinois and along the Mississippi River in eastern Iowa. This forced removal became the main cause of the Black Hawk War in 1832. Other Indian tribes that settled in Iowa include: Potawatomi, who moved from northeastern Illinois to southwestern Iowa and the Winnebago, who moved from Wisconsin to northeastern Iowa in 1840. When these tribes (with the exception of the Sioux who had previously abandoned their lands) were resettled by the U.S. Government in Kansas and Oklahoma, which occurred in the mid - late 1840s, there was no longer any organized Indian tribes in Iowa by 1850.
By time 1857 rolled around, part of the Mesquakie tribe decided to come back to Iowa where their tribal representatives purchased land in Tama county along the Iowa River. Many Indian tribes were dependent on the government when they were forced onto land reservations in the 19th century, but the Mesquakie were not. Since then, the Mesquakie tribe have owned and controlled their own lands.
Even though the Mesquakie tribe today struggle with keeping their identity as a bright culture including entertainment and display art like art, music, poetry, and dance, they are a vibrant reminder to the modern community of Iowa that people “need not surrender their own culture to the dominant culture which surrounds them.” To honor the Mesquakie and the culture that surrounds them today, many colleges and associations have grown to be much more conscious and aware of the present Indian community. Those organizations including the University of Iowa (college), the American Indian Student Association, and the Chicano/Indian American Culture Center, which holds the event of the American Indian Education Conference.
The Chicano/Indian American Culture Center helps focus on the Indians within not only the University of Iowa, but the university community as a whole. The American Indian Education Conference that took place in October of 1990 focused on the “cultural awareness” of the Indian community.
The various Indian tribes that have traversed Iowa have made our state what it is since they first established themselves as tribes. Their culture has helped shape how many Iowans live their lives today and many tribes have become a constant reminder of our interesting history.

Guidance Counselors

By Kaitlynn Jepsen

Guidance counselors are hired at schools to help children with their personal problems, applying for colleges, and so much more. They are great, but ours is the best! Mrs. Poppe is the Clarksville School’s guidance counselor. She has been working at the school since 2007.
Her favorite thing about Clarksville is the size and how she is able to build so many positive relationships with all the amazing students. She looks forward to seeing all the students grow up and make a positive impact on the world. She has helped my friends and I so much, and we are so grateful to have her.
Mrs. Poppe went to Iowa state for her master's degree in school counseling. She is married and has 3 daughters, Hannah, Maddie, and Emma. Her youngest daughter, Emma, is graduating this year from high school. She has a dog that her family and her adopted from the animal shelter. She is the cheer coach for basketball cheerleading.
She really enjoys seeing her students succeed and finally work through their problems. She is pretty funny and is an amazing, kind-hearted person in general. Clarksville would be pretty dull without her here to direct and help all of us towards the right decisions. Thank you, Mrs. Poppe for being a great guidance counselor and person.

How Reading Poems and Writing Can Help Reduce Stress

By Morgan Jacobs

Many people, including myself, usually look past poems when thinking about English class or looking for something to read in our spare time, but reading poems and writing can help us reduce stress and anxiety. A study done by Dr. James W. Pennebacker, the current chair of the psychology department at the University of Texas, showed the affects of writing down your ideas or troubling thoughts to help better yourself. He gave 46 college students the option to either write about traumatic events in their life or write about trivial topics for fifteen minutes for four days straight. After doing this, it was found that the students who wrote about events in their life visited the campus health center less often and used pain relievers less frequently.
Other studies have also shown that writing has helped people dealing with sleep apnea, asthma, migraines/headaches, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV, anxiety, depression, and cancer. When you are writing down what you are thinking, over time, it helps to relax yourself and slowly lowers your blood pressure and heart rate. The long term effect of doing this exercise can help to keep you to keep a more positive outlook and you understand and relive memories of other stressful events from your life.
After reading an article about this study, I decided to try it out for myself. My goal was to write at least four times a week for a month. I was able to do it, but it was a lot to handle and quite hard to stick to, especially when I was very busy with other activities. After trying this out for my own, I have decided to continue to do this, but only once a week or when I just need a minute to just think.
Now if you don’t care to write very much, there is another way to relieve stress. It’s quite simple and can be overlooked, but reading poems can help relieve stress. I met Lisa, NIACC english teacher, and she tried to use poetry to help calm her classes before they started. She would have someone from the class read aloud a poem just give a start to the class. She has continued to do this ever since she has started it and has seen a positive impact come from her students. Since she has started reading poems to her classes, she has seen her students grades improve and has had students thank her for doing this because it had helped them through the day.
Starting this as a habit can be hard, but I would recommend either going to poems daily, which is a service where they email you a new poem every day, or getting a book poems and reading one everyday. One recommendation I have for poetry books is No Matter the Wreckage by Sarah Kay. It is something easy to start getting into poetry and is mostly all free form poetry, so it’s not confusing. I also recommend Button Poetry on youtube if you would rather listen to your poems instead of reading them. In the end, I highly encourage you to start reading poetry and/or writing more to help you in your day to day life.

Evolution: The Beginning

By Ashten Elliott

I recently played the card game Evolution: The Beginning, so I thought I’d talk about it since not many people seem to know about it. Evolution: The beginning is a two to four-player card game in which you play cards to modify your species to survive and gain more points in order to win the game. You gain points by feeding your species and collecting the food at the start of your turn. You can make your creatures carnivores, which eat other creatures and can cause your opponent’s species to go extinct, and since you also gain points based on the cards you have left this is the best way to stop your opponent from gaining points.
The game itself is a way to get into the series which has three other games which are supposed to be more complicated versions of Evolution: The Beginning with different rules and gameplay mechanics, so far the other games in the series are Evolution, Evolution: Climate, Evolution: Flight, and Evolution: Oceans which comes out on September 12th. Flight is an expansion to the original game, while climate is standalone and Oceans is also going to be a standalone game. Back to The Beginning, the game ends once the deck has been gone through and the person to the right of that last person has had their turn you can change this so that the deck has to be gone through a certain amount of times to end the game or have it so that once a person loses all their species the game ends, however, if you choose the last option you will need to make sure that no one has any species immune to predator attacks otherwise the game wouldn’t end until you say so. Overall I found this game to be a lot of fun and plan to play the other installments in the series soon if you would like to play the game now would be a good time to get it as it is less than twenty dollars at most places.

Clarksville High 2019

By: Cheyenne Behrends

This year Clarksville High School has been off to a great start. We have had multiple successes already and we are only our full second week in.
Our boys varsity football team won their first football game of the season last night against rival, Nashua-Plainfield. Our girls varsity volleyball team also won their first game of the season last week as well. The girls have new coaches this year, Taylor Ahrenholtz and Jordan Scribner. They are two great additions to the team. The team has learned so much more than they have in the past already! The team's next game is next week.
College classes started up last week so make sure you finish those assignments! Some stress relievers for these college classes are as follows: chewing gum, light some candles, spend time outside of class, stress ball, reduce your caffeine intake, and meditate. Getting stressed out happens a ton, especially while taking two college classes and having 8 other classes on top of your schedule while involved in four sports.
We have added five new kids to our school this year. They are all doing very well. Our cross country team have been pushing themselves in practice a ton lately! They ran six miles last Thursday, without stopping! Now they should get a pat on the back for that. School sports pictures are also tomorrow right after school gets out. Don’t forget to pick up your packet at the office! I hope the school year continues to flow very smoothly. Have a great year everyone!
